A Monthly Giveaway For The Regular Posters? 3 Month Trial Run?

I’d like to run something by everyone and please let me know your thoughts. I’ve now been here 2 years and I’ve seen how much excitement is generated by the monthly drawings AR has. It’s always fun to click on that link and see if your name was drawn. The overwhelming majority of us are disappointed each month. No fault of the contest or anything, it’s just that with 18,000 plus members, the chances are slim. I’d like to try something to add to the monthly excitement. AR couldn’t exist without the support of its members, whether you actually post or not. We appreciate all the members!

I’d like to do a 3 month trial run starting this October, November and January. December is for our annual Secret Santa, so no drawing then. If you don’t post regularly or check in, then you won’t know about the contest. I’m thinking about "maybe" limiting it to people with a 100 posts count minimum. I’d like to do it the same way or similar to the way we gave away the Bronco. I got so many PM’s from people telling me how much fun that was! Even more people commented online. That’s what this is gonna be all about, having fun as well as a decent chance of our REGULARS winning something. I will not be eligible for any of these prizes, but I will donate towards the cost.

Here’s my initial thoughts on eligibility requirements for the contestants.

    1. Mainland U.S. residents only. This pains me to omit our foreign members, but it’s only because of shipping costs.
    2. You’re not eligible if you’ve won any of the regular AR monthly drawings in the last year, 3rd place winners included.
    3. The drawing will be held AFTER each months regular AR prize giveaway.
    4. Anyone who donates to the prize cost is eligible to win also, but it will not increase your chances of winning.
    5. I’d like to keep the prize value at around $500. each month.
    6. Tentative but not set in stone…….To be eligible you must have 100 posts or more since joining.
    7. People who might already own the prize are not eligible.
    8. You must want the prize and plan on keeping it. Cash donations in lieu of the prize will not be done.

I can’t and won’t do this on my own, so I’d need a little help from a few generous members. And I hope I’m not giving anyone donor fatigue, coming so soon after the Bronco giveaway, forgive me. Here’s my initial thoughts on anyone who’d like to help. I’d like to keep the MONTHLY donation amounts at either $50., $75. or $100. per donor. Remember, this will be for 3 months only. After January’s drawing, we can determine whether to continue this or not. I’d also like for each donor to commit to all 3 months so I don’t have to ask each month for more $. The money doesn’t need to be paid until around the time of that months drawing. Example: If you’d like to donate $50. each month, you’d pay $50. in October, $50. in November and $50. in January. I will commit $100. each month, depending on how much we receive. IF this works, I’ll cut off donations as soon as we receive $500. committed for each of the 3 months.

With that being said, I’m also totally open to doing this for October only, then seeing if everyone wants to continue. Maybe do it only every other month? For October I’d like to give away a Pit Boss Ultimate 3 Burner Griddle and some accessories! That’d be a helluva a way to kick it off I think! Anyway, I’m open to all your thoughts, criticism or suggestions. If this bombs, I’m ok with that. Thanks

That's awfully nice of you to think of us.

Makes us wonder what Mr Bones would chime in with.

I like the intent and concept you have going here PJ. My first reaction is not to do it monthly, but quarterly. That's often enough for donors to have to cough up, and it makes it easier to have a rotating cast of characters contributing (I would be one of those once in a while). Still builds plenty of excitement and doesn't risk stealing thunder from the full-membership drawing each month.

It would be useful to see some data. For example, a histogram of how many posters have post counts in some kind of reasonable set of "bins". That way you could likely see at a glance where to draw the post-count cutoff to get the target demo you're looking for, give you a good basis for choosing it. Ostensibly the site management could put something like this together fairly simply, and it would all be anonymized, just how many posters have how many posts. (They don't call me "Data Driven Dave D" for nothing)

The other thing to think about is the approx value of the prize. This would take significantly more work. The question is, how many products are even out there for given values - i.e., what if there are only two things (exaggerating to make the point) that would fall at $XXX? Is $500 too much, too little? I'm still pretty new at all this and have nowhere near the situational awareness many of y'all likely have at your fingertips on what gadgetry is out there.

But get a handle on those variables and I think this could be really cool.

start smaller, like an assortment of Meathead rubs or similar? Gift card to a Meat Seller?

While everyone may enjoy a Big Prize, there may be more joy in something more consumable/usable to start with. Plus, it wouldn't compete with the Big Big Prize.

John, I belong to the SaltStrong Fishing Club and they do a giveaway every month, too. The more a member posts, the greater their chances of winning. I am going to reach out to my friends on staff there to see exactly how they do this (they announce the winners on video and show a spreadsheet they have), and whether it would be something that we could do without having back end access to Pit servers and such. I've suggested that this be done for the official giveaway here but it went over like a led Zeppelin. If we did it this way you could be eligible too.

I like the idea, but I feel maybe it would be more sustainable to just do a Christmas in July secret Santa sorta thing. Less work or worrying about donations to keep it alive? Either way sounds fun to me

Bummer that a "Like" is not the same as a comment. I "Like" posts or comments way more than I comment myself. Half the time I don't know what to say or someone beat me to it.

I'll have to "up" my comment game if there is a 100 post minimum...

After reading the comments so far, I’d drop the 100 post minimum. Wasn’t a good idea.

Maybe do a combined 100 posts or member since 2019 (or some other date that made sense)?

            #8
100 posts eh? I think you had that around day 3 or so 😎
The idea is interesting and I think it could work, though quarterly like Data Driven Dave D said might be easier to manage and build some excitement. Maybe that would lead into a larger prize too.
I would think you could get a lot of people throwing in on this so you may not need to start at $50, maybe $5 or $10? Maybe start a poll to see how many people would actually participate and what they’d be willing to throw in? OR anything above the prize value gets donated to BBQ Relief?

Checks? I don't know if I have any anymore. Be easier to do Paypal or something like that.

I guess I'm old fashioned. I have 2 checkbooks. I go through at least 5 books of deposit slips before I go through a book of checks.

This idea would definitely create more frequent excitement about getting more stuff. I’ll paraphrase something I said on another thread: I’m not here for the stuff but for the educational and experiential benefits. If I were to win something, I’d probably pass and/or donate it to someone else. And, that’s just a function of my age and where I am in life. I can usually afford the stuff I want and go ahead and buy it. It irritates the crap out of my kids who always ask me, "Dad, what can we get you for Christmas, Father’s Day, etc." I respond with, "just come visit or drop me a line."

Overall, I thinks it’s a cool idea, I just felt compelled to give another perspective. Mods May want to consider the addition of a ‘Thumbs Down’ option to my post.

Okay, I’ll be the curmudgeon. I don’t like the idea. I doubt anyone joins the Pit because of the chance of winning the monthly drawing. If they did, they should try a little math. In my view, the addition of another prize that is paid for by Pit members is too cash-based. It creates too many opportunities for conflict and discord.

Oh, by the way, Panhead John in item 3 in your OP, it should be month’s not months. Yes folks, I just corrected PJ’s grammar. 😂🤣🤣

Agreed. The oversight also wouldn’t be worth the effort. What constitutes a post? Who decides? Why is or that fair/allowed while this/that is not? I’m fine with someone giving it a go, but I don’t feel it’s something The Pit would benefit greatly from.

Draznnl Yeah, I know most people don’t join for the prizes, but, since we’re here already…..
snowswamp Thanks for your thoughts, maybe the 100 post limit isn’t a good idea.

I am of similar mind (what little I have) Draznnl. I joined and love The Pit to learn and discover, not "win" or compete. If this idea is pursued, I know we all have the right to not participate or participate. I also worry about the "In group-ness" these kind of things engender.

Panhead John Since you like to correct people's grammar, I'll do the same with you.....only it is your math!
You said you have belonged to this forum 3 years, yet your "joined date" is August, 2020.

PJ, Get your calculator out and try that math again. It just SEEMS like it's been 3 years.

Same here. I do a lot more reading on various topics than posting. That said though, I'm ok with being ineligible as I still feel very new here after only a year on the paid site. There's just so much to absorb!

Not trying to be a curmudgeon either but what you are proposing is a private sweepstakes which is prohibited in many states including my own without a permit or license from the proper authorities. I know AR pays big money to third parties to keep the monthly drawing legal across the USA.

I won’t say I am against it, but @draznni makes a good point (the discord part)

Maybe we should do something for non-US members first. Even if it is swag

I am torn. It sounds like a good idea, but it would no doubt cause my winning streak of losing to end... If I win, I lose because I can't get people to feel sorry for me that I haven't won.. Or, it is just another way for me to lose...
