People don't realize their nutritional beliefs are nothing more than articles of faith based on no real data.

Smoker_Boy I don't think we are all stupid, just manipulated by bad actors. Until very recently we assumed that nutritional and other information promoted and disseminated by health "authorities" was true. I think that is changing somewhat. The original "study" that the American Heart Association used to promote this idea did not choose participants through random selection. That completely invalidates the study right off the bat. Attempts to get the same results in three replications failed.

IDK. It’s possible for everyone to be right here, it’s possible for the author to hold biases and still be right, and it’s certainly valid to question results, as long as one doesn’t conflate one’s own opinions and observations with actually studying the data… and if one does study the data, know how to interpret it and accept the results.
I’m more miffed (although admittedly not very much at all, in fact it barely registers [but it does register]) about it being presented as a sneak peek, when in fact the article had already been published and widely disseminated.

Just to clarify, "sneak peeks" are simply a chance for our Pitmaster Club members to check out all content as soon as we publish it on AmazingRibs.com before it is shared on the homepage, in social media, etc. As for the article originally appearing in the Washington Post, we were offered the unique opportunity by the author to reprint her articles on AmazingRibs.com without the paywall that limits access to them on WashintonPost.com.

Smoker_Boy I do not have reason to believe that the Am Heart Assoc. intentionally set out to deceive. But once the food industry invested billions in promoting "Fat-Free" and nearly every product on the shelves was marketed as such, they had a financial interest in protecting that idea when it was clearly shown to be false. People who pointed out that the study was invalid were treated as frauds at best, and often times as if they were murderers. "Nutritionists" who just happened to work for outfits like Kraft foods were employed en masse to go to media to protect the fat-free empire. And because of the lack of scientific literacy in our country, it worked for many decades. It's still working.

Johnny Booth I am just trying to make a judgement of charity. I agree that it is hard to imagine how med professionals read that study and, seeing that the sample was taken from a small homogenous ethnic group, concluded that it yielded valid and reliable data.

The food industry in conjunction with the pharma industry, and to some extent, the medical industry.
The Pharma industry has 15 Billion reasons to keep people convinced that they need to be taking statins.
I'll leave it at that before things spill over the line into being political.

Just because a person is smart enough to become a Dr., PhD, lawyer etc. does not mean they have the courage of their convictions, or a moral compass. Things can often be ethical; but against the laws of nature and/or common sense.

So, I’ve had experience with elimination diets, that’s all I’ll say about that. But the one thing I learned from those, much like a strict carnivore diet, is that most of the “health” experts and studies fail to consider what we are eating our saturated fats with? Carbs ( in their various forms) are the culprit amongst other things. Certainly every person’s body is different and metabolizes things different, but bloodwork don’t lie. How can markers improve on an all animal diet without fruit, veggies, carbs etc? It happens with too many people to be a one off.
To someone’s point earlier, we’ve been lied to

OK, I mis-read what your intent was. I totally agree that sugar (and other carbs) are what kills people, in general.

The one that messed me up was the Snack Wells brand, in the early 90s. I’d just come off a 4x bypass at 37 years old, and my cardiac surgeon had put me on the Ornish diet, which was no fats AT ALL. Not just animal fats, but also oils, margarine, whatever. Cheese. Eggs. NONE. And here are these cookies and cakes, with no fat!
Except they were HIGHER in simple carbohydrates than regular cookies!
At the end of a year, my cholesterol had actually gone up. That’s when I went off the ridiculous diet, and on to statins, which is another story entirely. I can’t complain, because I’m still here. But it’s been a ride.

I didn’t see anybody mention the fat cause cardio problems study by Ansel Keyes which was flawed, corrupt & cooked. It led us to all the low fat, non-fat madness of the last 50 years.
Real food is good for you. Food altered, modified & concocted in a factory, well, not so much.

Finster - My cardiologist said it would be best not to drink anymore.
After almost dying from that heart attack and surgery, I'll listen to what he says.

Interesting. My cardiologist has never mentioned it in the 13 years I've been seeing him.
Maybe because I'm not a big drinker, and only indulge occasionally.
At least you still get to indulge in grilling...

OK, I get it. This is why we have never written about health and we will not do so again. Diet is religion-like and politics-like and none of us knows the truth because nobody knows the truth. Here is what I have written about it and that will be the last word. I am closing this debate lest it end in fisticuffs, and we do know that is not good for our health.
