Sneak Peek: Article "Despite What They Say, Saturated Fat Is Bad For You"
Over the years, there has been a lot of debate regarding saturated fat. Below, author and James Beard Award winner, Tamar Haspel, dives into it all and provides her thoughtful conclusion in this article entitled "Despite What They Say, Saturated Fat Is Bad For You".
My cardiologist wants my LDL down around 50-55.
We have raised my main cholesterol med, so we will see.
I love bacon and butter, but I damn sure don't want to go back in that OR again.
I know what you mean. I’m headed in Leap day Feb 29. They are going back in with a catheter to do more ablations in my heart to try to stop AFIB. This is their second try. It should be easy, last time was.
My guy cut my rosuvastatin in half and added fenofibrate. I used to get terrible muscle pain and weakness from statins (I’ve been on them since the 90s), this seems to help with that.

What I hear (read) is that maybe saturated fats on a daily basis might not be a good idea, but that if one eats moderate amounts on special occasions that would be mitigating the risks. Butter once a week on Sunday morning? I can do that. Bacon once a week on Sunday? I can do that. Tallow fried French Fries a few times a year? I can do that too.
Avocado oil is a liquid at room temp. I'm a huge fan for daily use. Also, who doesn't love olive oil?!? That's an amazing fat. We can make this work both ways.
Large Big Green Egg, Weber Performer Deluxe, Weber Smokey Joe Silver, Fireboard Drive, 3 DigiQs, lots of Thermapens, and too much other stuff to mention.
I was going through a pound of butter a week, maybe even more; a couple years ago I switched to cooking most things in olive oil or avocado oil.
I don’t eat as much pork and beef as I used to; I eat it less often, and I eat less of it when I do have it. That wasn’t a conscious decision, it just happened. I still love both; cheeseburgers are still my #1 most favorite food of all time, except when ribs are. I’ll eat bacon, but I don’t eat a lot of it; I’ll go a month or two without any, then I’ll make a couple pounds of thick cut and eat a couple slices a day until it’s gone.
I had a lipid profile a couple weeks ago. My LDL s 61.2. It was 91.8 on 01/05/22.
For reference, “LDL Cholesterol Classification: Optimal < 100 MG/DL Near Optimal/Above Optimal 100-129 MG/DL Borderline High 130-159 MG/DL High 160-189 MG/DL Very High >= 190 MG/DL”
My last cardiologist wasn’t concerned about LDL, but he was pretty gung ho about triglycerides. Those went from 263 to 89.
For reference, “Triglyceride Classification Normal <150 MG/DL Borderline High 150-199 MG/DL High 200-499 MG/DL Very High >= 500 MG/DL”
Triglycerides are lowered by eating less simple carbs: white rice, potatoes, and white bread, and of course sweet baked goods, sugar sodas, etc. I don’t eat white bread anyhow, I love dark wheats and ryes. I LOVE sweet stuff. I just think of it now as delicious, delicious poison.
I certainly take enough pills and shots, but I was taking them 2 years ago, too. The biggest difference is that I lost enough weight to be able to go to the gym, and that started a cascade of beneficial results. It looks like you guys are stuck with me, for now anyhow.

Have to meet with doc to discuss this week. I’m hoping he ok’s giving me 3 months to change diet (I’ve been eating poorly) and then retest. My wife is strong against satins….I’m in the middle 🙄
hoovarmin You gotta get that heart rate to 150% of your baseline and keep it there for 150 minutes a week. The max rate decreases as you get older. Always talk to your cardiologist first, he made me get a stress test and a catheterization first.
Mosca I agree. When my kids got out of school for Christmas break I couldn't get back to the gym for weeks. Then I got pneumonia. I cannot wait to get back on the stair stepper.
I do 40 minutes on the treadmill, then 20 rower/20 bike, then 40 treadmill, then a day off. Then 20/20, 40, 20/20, day off. If I do the treadmill two days in a row, the arthritis in my hip gets inflamed.
My numbers are elevated but not quite as high as smokenoob's. But I have higher HDL, resulting in risk ratios that are still pretty good. I restarted statins a couple of months ago (fell off the wagon during the height of the pandemic), so we'll see how it goes. My cardio is making sure I get the BP down as well...

No data in this article. Not worth the paper it was printed on, and since it's digital, not worth that. This is an opinion piece about a religious commitment, nothing whatsoever to do with science.
Wow - we are right on the same page. Every person on this earth is unique. At 60yrs old, I was absolutely able to lower my cholesterol, blood pressure, and A1C to healthy levels through diet and exercise. I use animal fats to cook, and I eat meat at least 7 times a week, so let them explain that.
Johnny Booth a huge part of my graduate training was research design and evaluation. When I read an article like this one I just shake my head. Nutrition "journalism" is pure voodoo.
This is the same author, Tamar Haspel. We have an agreement to reprint her articles from the Washington Post. SHe is a meticulous researcher and knows her stuff.
Scotch: Current favorite- The Arran (anything by them), Glenmorangie 12yr Lasanta, sherry cask finished. The Balvenie Double Wood, also like Oban 18yr, and The Glenlivet Nadurra (Oloroso sherry cask finished) among others. Neat please.

Large amounts of small LDL cholesterol particles can be concerning because of these smaller particles' superior ability to penetrate arterial walls.
questionable conclusions.
I don’t think this is a good avenue for this site to pursue. It’s bordering on violating some of the core principles that make this the best BBQ site on the web.
This was the first article we have published on Health and the last. We will no longer publish ANY articles on health by anyone because it is a moving target. That said, I have great respect for Haspel and her understanding of science.
