The long awaited review of my Santa Maria Grill.

As many of you know I recently purchased a custom made Santa Maria Grill, from no where else but Santa Maria Ca.
I found this on Etsy. The guy, builder, Cody is a really nice dude. In fact we still chat about once a week or so.
It started off with a little back and forth conversations and we exchanged phone #’s. Had a couple of nice chats and I decided to have him build the grill for me. I had a few requests for the grill, extended the height by 4”, make the side shelves foldable and make a metal cover for the cooking grate. All of which he was excited to do. And btw he did not charge extra for. Wow. 👍
A few weeks later the grill was done and ready to ship. Cody also sent me several pics as the build was coming along, which kept me excited for sure.

I received the grill about a week after it shipped. Not bad considering it went from Ca. to NY.

I do have to say there was one issue when it arrived that I didn’t see when I signed for the delivery.
Apparently the shipping Co. knocked it over and the back lip was bent in pretty bad. Also the back itself was pushed inward enough that the cooking grate couldn’t be lowered into the main firebox. I contacted Cody and he was probably as upset if not more than I was.
Being that I’m rather handy I was able to straighten it out to the point you could not tell it was ever damaged.
So really no big deal for me. But Cody insisted on doing something for me and reimbursed me a couple hundred bucks for the trouble. Again he’s a great guy.
Since than he is now using FedEx for his business and has had no issues at all.

The grill itself is absolutely awesome. Extremely well made. Everything is welded together except for the folding shelves. The main body is made from 1/8” thick carbon steel and uses only 3 pieces. The rear lip, back, bottom, front and front lip is one piece. Very nice.
This thing is sturdy as a rock and I’m sure it’s gonna last for decades.
One of the things that sets this grill apart is the cooking grate. He uses REAL stamped stainless steel. A magnet does not stick to it. Which I feel will make the grate last for a very long time and absolutely will not rust.

Overall I would give this awesome cooker a 5 out of 5 rating.
If anyone here is interested in a top notch Santa Maria Grill I would highly recommend looking at this one from Cody.
Please reach out to me if you have any questions or want to contact him.

Now for some pics and video if I can download them.

Is Ca Caneccticut? Cause that's not really far on my MappQuezt.

Man that is sweet. I sure could have used 2, 3-wall one piece sections on my vertical.

Congrats on a mack daddy purchase!!

I made it a point to have all my steel for my smoker shipped fedex. One shipment was too big and had to be shipped freight.

That looks fantastic, and fun! How long did it take for you to figure out the correlation between grate height and cooking temperature?

It’s actually not hard at all. Just go by feel. If it seems like it’s taking too long lower the grate and or add more fuel. Or raise it if it’s going too fast.

Congrats. That looks like a whole lot of fun.

It is. I’ve been using this grill by far the most out of all my cookers.

Thank you for the review and photos. I’m sure that you would agree, after learning your grill, that this style of cooking is just plain fun. I know I do everytime I start a fire in mine.

Haha. Not my first rodeo. But it is my first dedicated open fire cooker.

Very nice! I especially like the firebrick-lined fire box. That is what my Buckaroo Santa Maria style grill (from Lompoc BTW) has and it is a great feature. Can't wait to see more of your cooks.

Michael_in_TX Yes. They fit perfectly. Only had to trim the ones in the very front.
