    Hungarian Cuisine

Can anyone recommend any Hungarian cookbooks? A dear friend passed away recently and has donated her books. If there is one of note, I would like to acquire it. One, because I don’t have Hungarian book. And two, it would be in her honor.

I don't know and I have never cooked Hungarian but I love the food. Maybe a team cook sometime if you can find a good recipe.

I’ve got a bazillion recipes we could team cook that are Hungarian and came from the Old Country via my grandmother

I can’t recommend a Hungarian cookbook (but see below), all of my recipes come from my mother/grandmother. And I’m happy to share those.

I do look at Offbeat Budapest when I need some help figuring out what the “put some XXX in” actually means, LOL

Classic Hungarian dishes with detailed recipes and cooking instructions.

BUT if you want something that is authentically Hungarian-Israeli OR a history of Hungarian cooking with recipes, I can recommend both of these. They did help me to get in closer touch with my maternal family’s heritage

Just note that both of these are deeply intertwined with Hungarian and Jewish cooking, so may not be what you are looking for.

Also just note that a traditional Hungarian kitchen should include Palinka (a plum brandy) and Unicum (an herbal schnapps) :-)

        I’ll eventually get a list of what’s available. I’ll keep y’all posted.

A colleague of mine went to a conference in Budapest this past summer and brought me back some paprika, both "regular" and smoked. It is night and day compared to what we typically get in the States. Amped up flavor, even the regular.

Makes the typical McCormick paprika nothing other than sawdust used as food coloring.

ecowper, do you know how Spice House's compare?

fkrall I haven’t tried Spice House. I used to buy from Penzey before Spice Jungle and would say those two are comparable.
