Cook and stir the beef, onion, and bell pepper in a large pot over medium heat until the beef is brown and onion and pepper are tender, about 10 minutes. Drain grease from beef
Stir in beans, tomatoes, tomato sauce, jalapenos (if using), chili powder, red pepper flakes, black pepper, salt, and garlic powder. Bring mixture to a slow boil; cover and reduce heat. Simmer chili at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally so that it does not stick. This chili can be simmered for several hours; the longer you simmer, the more flavor you will get.
DavidNorcross Not to change the subject but if you and Teresa make the Cajun Country MeatUp in October, dinner at the Poor Boy Riverside Inn is on me! [unless I feign drunken memory lapse]
Panhead John we are sure considering it. We were actually looking into flights last night. I am planning a trip to FL to see my sister in the fall and that is the only real stumbling block. I think it is a given that your drunken stooper will surely be in existence regardless. Hoping we can pull this one off.
I’m not taking the bait this time, no way. That will have to be addressed in the upcoming book I hope Panhead John will coauthor with me. The tentative title is “Hell no we don’t do that in Texas”.
Nope. Just nope. But if it did, it sure as hell wouldn't be canned beans, which is the give away this a faux recipe. I bet the author snuck across the Arkansas border.
Now I know why I couldn't sleep last night.....something was wrong on the internet!
"Deeply impressed with a sense of responsibility devolving on me, I can not, in justice to myself, repress the emotion of my heart, or restrain the feelings which my sense of obligation to my fellow-citizens has inspired...." -- Sam Houston's Inaugural Address as President of the Republic of Texas, 1836, and while chili is not mentioned in the speech, he surely was thinking of it, because, Texas.
Texas chili does not have beans. Period. End of story. Do not pass go; do not collect $200. Quod erat demonstrandum!
I am pretty sure it was, "Remember no beans in the chili, Remember the Alamo!, Remember Goliad", which was shouted as a reminder to those cooking dinner that Chili ain't gots no beans, and the might as well go ahead and win the battle for Texas Independence.
