I followed Candy’s advice and added some at the bottom of my hopper, then filled with my usual pellets. The brisket came out great with an awesome smoke flavor! Thanks again Candy!

isn't black walnut toxic to humans? I know when doing woodworking with black walnut you have to wear a respirator or mask. Is it not so with the smoke?

Very harsh by itself but used as a mixture with other woods. I don’t think it’s used a lot but don’t think it contains the active toxins necessary to cause health concerns. In woodwork inhaling the dust is a different matter.

Texastweeter your dead on. Troutman I would advise people not to use it. While breathing in the wood dust is very toxic breathing in the smoke is even more so. I had to learn the toxicities of various compounds for a job I had in the farm and forestry industry. That included fires.

I would never use BW, you could not pay me enough and even free I would not use it. My health means to much to me.

Curious for a quick response. Knowing that walnut sawdust is toxic to some animals, are there any toxicity issues relating burning it? Will be produc

Decide for yourself. As I stated it’s not a very good smoking wood by itself, very bitter. But I’ve found these pellets that CSQ handed out do a decent job when used sparingly with other pellets. Anything to amp up pellet smoke profiles is desirable to me. I’ve had zero ill affects from their use.

Troutman thank you those references seem more up to date than what I had 25 years ago when anything that caused an effect was put on the no no list by the EPA.

The smoke and the pellets can still cause a skin irritation in a minority or people and I still won't be using them because of there bitterness. But each there own.
