Forgive my ignorance to all of the pellet grill owners, but, how do you change out the pellets? I am always reading about a different combination of pellets being used for a certain cook, but the one thing I have not read about is how to remove the pellets leftover from the previous cook. Do these cookers have a trapdoor or similar facsimile to dump the old pellets so you can load up with a different variety? I have never really seriously kicked the tires on a pellet grill, so I am completely in the dark on how easily the pellets can be changed out from one cook to the next. Sorry ken g I didn't mean to hi-jack your thread.

To pellets or not?

Changing out the pellets can be done several ways. Some pellet cookers have trap doors that allow you to dump the pellets into a 5 gallon bucket. Others can just be scooped out with a plastic cup (the method I use for mine). If you have a finger guard, you can use a vacuum to suck them out (I find the Home Depot "bucket head" works well, and the hose fits in between the holes in the guard). In short, it all depends on the pellet cooker you purchase.
Many people just use one type of pellet and do not change them out.

I fall into the "one type of pellet" camp. My GMG provides a very mild smoke flavor, not strong enough that I think I'd notice any difference using different wood types. I got a pellet tube to increase the smoke flavor, but haven't had a chance to use it yet. Maybe my opinion will change after getting that going.

I put pellets in with what I have. I still have some pecan and cherry and 2 bags of apple but will be using Hickory exclusively from BBQ Delight (the others are all BBQ Delight) as I don’t detect a big difference in Smokey flavor although I think hickory gives the most Smoke flavor IMO. Some pellets have trap doors, mine doesn’t I just keep going and run it down low until
im ready to change flavors.

Mr. Bones I will definitely try some mesquite. Finally getting warm enough to cook outside lots again.

I'll throw my two cents in. I had an offset that I loved, but long cooks like pork butts and briskets kicked my butt. I just got the Rec-Tec knock off pellet cooker from Home Depot and I love it. Been using it every weekend since. I have to use an Amaz-N tube to help increase the smoke flavor, but the convenience and temp control makes it so much more enjoyable for me.
I do think I got better flavor from my offset, but the trade off in convenience is totally worth it to me.

Why not try a big cook with the hovergrill? You could swap positions midway through. My guess is you would have great results. I've done comparable long cooks at 225 and I've done them at 350. It always comes out great. But I suspect MCS has a hold of you and there will be no stopping it.

Weil after much research and comparison, I decided to pull the trigger and order a Rec Tec Stampede. It came down to Grilla Silverback and Stampede.
I like the SB due to dual wall thermojacket and their new Alpha Smoke feature but the wifi and 30 day money back guarantee made the Stampede too good to pass up if I don't like the pellet scene.
Now comes the fun part. Waiting for it to arrive!

The big day arrived today with Estes delivering the grill to my garage. I always have a bit of trepidation when I buy something sight unseen. Rec Tec did not disappoint at all. The amount of stainless in this grill is very reassuring. The wheels are awesome roller blade style and it floats around on patio with ease in spite of its weight. Assembly was easy with better half reciting the directions and I'm wrenching. Probably took longer to un-package it than to assemble. No corners were cut with the packaging and no shipping damage to mention. The grill cover is unimaginably high quality, heavy weight material with nylon straps with buckles that hold it in place around the each leg and a draw string that cinches up the bottom. I will season it later this week and put to work this weekend. So far, I am pleased with my purchase and the extra expense appears to be worth it.
