I have (and have had) lots of cookers! There's not a one of them that was totally bad. Pluses and minuses to every one of them actually. Your purchase should be more about your budget -- you have to have money to get meat to cook on whatever cooker you choose. And lots of practice is essential! I likely refer more people who want a smoker to the Weber Smokey Mountain than any other cooker. Yes, this is blasphemy in the Wood Pellet area! The WSM teaches a new cook how to manage fire and smoke, that's a benefit to any cook on any cooker. And with the smaller price tag, there's lots of money for meat!

Best pellet smoker around $1000 that isn't a Traeger or GMG?

- Lynx 27" NG Grill with Rotisserie (from 1998 and still looking great after new burners, valves, and knobs) and GrillGrates for searing
- Smokin' Tex 1400 Electric Smoker with Auber Thermostat Control (since June 2017)
- Rec Tec 680 (since August 2017)
- Thermoworks Smoke and iGrill Thermometers
- Thermapen (wife's- she lets me use it)
I've had the Rec Tec 680 for ~3 months now, have gone ~140lbs of pellets, and it has performed flawlessly. A few minor complaints though- no easy way empty hopper, have to scoop them out when you want to change pellets
- is a bit shorter versus my gasser so I have to lean down to pick up or put food on...
Other than save a few $s on materials, not sure why they made it this short. Also, haven't compared to other pellet grills so maybe they're all this short.- They have an internal light, but it is pretty useless at night versus a flashlight. Would rather it not have it so the optional internal shelf can move further back.
Hope this helps and good luck in your shopping.

I've had my Rec Tec 680 for about a year and a half and have gone through around 350 pounds of pellets with no issues. Love it. Had the Traeger Texas prior to that and the Rec Tec blows it out of the water. It's amazing they are both about the same price.

People in this thread are going to think this is blasphemy, but I'm swearing off pellet smokers in favor of something a lot more versatile. I know a lot of people like RecTec, but they have the same problem that I have hated in every pellet smoker I've ever had... the hassle of cleaning them, and frankly I think their quality is just OK (better than Traeger and GMG) but still not great. Were I to buy another pellet grill, it would have been a Yoder. Quality is much higher, as is the price, but I would have stepped up for it and they're easier to maintain. But I have decided that my problem with every pellet smoker is that they're greasy, messy, hard to clean, and for as great as they do with low-n-slow that's just not important enough for me to sacrifice grilling. I grill as much as I smoke, and to have something that is a great smoker but can't grill just isn't worth it for me anymore. I've had that for 10 years. Time to move on. So frankly I am buying a top of the line Weber Summit gas grill. I've decided that 225 degrees is 225 degrees no matter where it comes from, and if I want smoke I can use a tube or the built in smoke burner. And I'll be able to do all the things I couldn't do with pellets.

I’ve got an old offset, and the nice thing about cleaning it - I open up the drain and remove some dampers, squirt some dish soap in and hose it out. Same with my gas and charcoal grills. I can see where cleaning a pellet with electronics and stuff could be a little harder.

An oven is just an oven, right? Not a fan of gas grills, mainly because of convenience factor, always ran out of gas at a bad time and the moisture level burning gas. I'm just wishing I'd get my oven back... Hope you're happy with your choice -- it's your backyard!

If I were looking for a new pellet grill I would have to give serious consideration to the Blazn Grills or the Yoder and if I could swing it maybe a Mak. Those are all above your price point though, I have a Grilla Silverback and I am pleased with it and they have excellent customer service. At 699.00 you have some left over for meat to throw on it.
