Lunch today at Bar-A-BBQ in Montgomery, TX. I had some good brisket, excellent turkey, and tasty jalapeno cheese sausage. Others also had chicken- great; boudin-less than great; and other entrees. For sides I tried the brisket dirty rice which was outstanding and the potato cheese casserole which goss we s by some fancier name I don’t recall. I found it solidly mediocre.
Some shots of the pits, the menu, and then the food.
Large Big Green Egg, Weber Performer Deluxe, Weber Smokey Joe Silver, Fireboard Drive, 3 DigiQs, lots of Thermapens, and too much other stuff to mention.
Lots of nice, artsy fartsy hippie crafty shops! You wouldn’t thing this is a suburb of one of the largest cities in the USA!
Corkscrew occupies a large ranch building about 100 yards up a side street.
They open at 11AM; the first 25 arrivals pick a number, everyone else stands in line. We were there at 10 minutes to 10, and got #19.
Indoors there is a chalkboard and pieces of chalk available… SheilaAnn got right to the point with it. Smart Pitmaster she is, always thinking.
The BBQ? ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING, IMO. Everything was excellent. Everything. The one thing that I thought was just okay, the spinach slaw, everyone else raved about, so 🤷🏻♂️?
Brisket moist: great. Brisket lean: excellent. Ribs, some of the best I’ve had in Texas. Mac & cheese: upheld the standard. Pulled pork (upper left): great. Sauce: who knows, who cares?
Whole chicken kicked out the jams. Peach cobbler: killer.
Lisa and I both got 2 meat plates just so we could try more of the meats selections. Banana pudding for dessert cause we have no intentions of ever buying smaller pants.
We got there about half an hour before opening and were invited to take a look around the cook shack that is behind the restaurant.
Lisa got the turkey and the chicken for her meats, with mac& cheese and the cheesy taters completing the plate.
We both thought the turkey was off the mark. It wasn't bad by any means, but it just lacked a depth of flavor. The chicken was very good. It has a similar flavor to the chicken from The Shed in MS. But wasn't as good as what you get at The Shed. It was a very enjoyable meal, but nothing was over the top amazing.
For my meats I got fatty brisket, and the jalapeno cheddar sausage. My sides were the cucumber salad and the dirty brisket rice. The brisket was very good, and you certainly didn't need a knife to cut it. The smoke profile was really good. The sausage was also very good as well with good flavor. That banana pudding was a little odd being made of banana pudding with ginger snap cookies instead of vanilla wafers. There were no slices of banana either. There was nothing wrong with the flavor, and I'm sure they do it that way just to be a little different from the thousands of other places that serve banana pudding. I do wonder if they wouldn't be better served keeping it true to tradition instead of trying to buck convention. But in the end we weren't sorry we got it.
Much like Tejas, the company was the highlight of the trip with the food being a welcome addition. If you are on the fence about coming to one of the meat-ups, quit thinking about, and just come. Neither Lisa nor I are what anyone would call people persons, but the group has made us feel welcome. They are the reason we are having such a great time. The food is just an added bonus.
Shelia Ann,Tom and a High School friend he had not seen for many years, and my wife and I went to Corkscrew BBQ and it did not disappoint.
We sampled the Turkey, Brisket, Pulled Pork, Chicken, and Pork Ribs. For sides we had the Coleslaw, Baked Beans, Creamy Potato Salad, and Peach Cobbler. There were no losers in either list. From my perspective the Pulled Pork was very good and the slaw was really unique and exceptional. The pulled pork was unusually moist. The Ribs, Turkey and Chicken were all good. What I found unusual was that while all may not have been the best, everything was very good. There was one couple who obviously frequents the place who insisted we missed out by not getting the Beef Ribs. I could make this place as a regular stop if it was near my home. I am sorry I didn’t get food pics, so I will need to rely on others. The only pic I got was after we began eating the Turkey. Even the bread was good.

I also ate at Bar-A-BBQ today, along with some other people…[don’t remember their names] Anywho, I had the smoked chicken, brisket boudin…..the cheesy tater casserole and Mac n cheese were my sides. My chicken was pretty damn good! A little smoke, nice crusty skin and even the breast was moist and juicy. They squirted it with some of their house-made BBQ sauce which was excellent! I wasn’t a fan of their brisket boudin, in fact I took about 3 bites and left the rest of it untouched. Their Mac n cheese was pretty darn good, some of the best I’ve had on the BBQ trail. Their cheesy tater casserole was also very good! In 2 visits there, the only thing that disappointed me was their beans, on my first visit 1 1/2 years ago and the boudin today. All in all, Bar A is a great place to visit and highly recommended!
Their BBQ chicken…👍 Cheesy tater casserole top left, then the brisket boudin and Mac n cheese…

Also at Corkscrew: SheilaAnn has declared her Pitmaster bona fides!
Afterward we had a lot of socializing still to do, so we wandered a bit through Spring until we found Trilogy Brew, a very nice and quaint place to relax and gab. Super nice baristas!

Backtracking to Saturday morning, 58limited and I headed over to La Cocina Taco House again.
Mario was there, still slingin’!
This time I got one wheat, one corn, the corn with chorizo beans, red eggs, chorizo potatoes, cheese, onions, cilantro; the wheat with green eggs, and the same other stuff. Incredible. Best breakfast tacos, period.
These were the best breakfast tacos that I have ever had, and I've had a lot of breakfast tacos here in Texas. I got one with red chili eggs and one with green chili eggs. Both with chorizo beans, cheese, on flour tortillas. That's it - I kept it simple. I'm going back for more tomorrow morning.
To add to the Bar-A conversation we enjoyed most everything we ordered, We're light eaters; had brisket flat, pork ribs, jalapeno cheddar sausage, and turkey breast. The sides were the dirty rice and potato casserole. The dirty rice was very good, the potato dish edible. If you prefer a gentle smoke profile this is the place for you, not a complaint, just a comment. While I would prefer a touch more smoke flavor this was still flavorful with very good texture and mouth feel on all meats. None of them would disappoint, not the best we've had on these Meat Ups but somewhere in the top five.
J-Melt, clockwise, my hands, Michael (from tx), PJ too focused on stuffing his yapper to look up, Lisa (mate to Will), David (58 Limited), Will (xfmr), Neal (Draznl), and Bill aka Steve (Purc), and my bride the photographer's empty chair.

camaraderie: what Waiting for the Worms said!
Corkscrew: no, we did not get a tour or any personal attention. But, the staff was so cool! Here are my atmosphere pics:
so there was a chalk board to occupy bbq goers while waiting to order
the line is crazy! And these are the people that did NOT get their numbered place in line!

Here’s a close up of the moist (fatty) brisket. Note the close up of the chicken and the turkey. Juicy and flavorful. And I was talking smack about not liking smoked turkey. I stand corrected.
