My flight doesn't leave San Antonio until 6, so after paying $35 to park and spend 30 minutes at the Alamo I decided to find some lunch. And I hit the jackpot. I found a place called Taquitos and got some real tacos - a barbacoa, a pastor, a chorizo and I am pretty sure the last one was tongue. I was one of the few gringos in the joint, and there was a small language barrier. Didn't matter, all four were freaking excellent.

I'd like to add my thanks to Panhead John for organizing this shindig, and Mosca and I believe 58limited along with John for the gift bags. It was great meeting members face to face, and reconnecting with the men and women I met at the last one I attended. I even found out i have some neighbors, pasmom and Purc who I'll try and hook up with in Chatt in a couple weeks. And me and IdahoJim's better half are going to try to collaborate on recreating the Burnt Bean's corn pudding. We had a ball and I really encourage everyone to try and attend one if at all possible.

This was one of the funnest Meat Ups yet. I enjoyed meeting new attendees and reconnecting with veteran attendees. I would like to give a shout out and big thanks to Tom Mosca - he brought lots of cheese, three big links of Kielbasa sausage, and a very nice dark rum to share with everyone. Mitzie pasmom and Bill Purc also contributed to the cheese supply so we had plenty of snacks on hand in between restaurant runs.

Dave, you are such a silent helper I forgot about you and your regular contribution of keeping an accurate record of who’s attending . Also, thank you for buying a tasting at Smitty’s. The Beef Shoulder was a disappointment at Kruze, but Smitty’s was every bit as moist as I remembered. I really liked your idea that we could all pitch in and get a tasting sample at each BBQ joint rather than trying to do multiple sit down dinners.

I forgot to mention the cheese. The Sweetwater Valley Farm cheese pasmom and Purcbrought is from a local dairy farm and it is excellent. The cheese that Mosca brought was also outstanding, as was the Kielbasa. Unfortunately, captainlee and his wife were in the room next to mine, and all that cheese... they claim I didn't keep them up, but they were probably just being polite.

Shortly after the Meatup plans were finalized back in July, Mosca messaged me with a great idea. He asked about maybe emailing some rub companies with our MeatUp plans to see if they would mind donating some rubs as gifts for the attendees. I said go for it! All they can say is no. I believe he emailed 5 or 6 companies with details about who we are and what we’re doing, as members of AmazingRibs. Well, 3 of the companies responded to Tom and generously donated some of their rubs for everyone! I told him I’d contact the San Marcos Visitors Center and inquire about some gift bags for all the attendees. I received a reply from the Visitors Center the same day! They arranged for us to pick up some really nice insulated cooler bags, which can also be worn as a backpack, good quality too! Tom also threw in some great gourmet cheese storage bags, thanks Tom!
I’d like to give a big thank you for the generosity of Denny Mikes Sauces and Seasonings www.DENNYMIKES.COM , Dizzy Pig Craft Seasonings www.DizzyPigBBQ.com and also SuckleBusters Rubs, Sauces and Such www.sucklebusters.com Can’t wait to try out these awesome rubs! And a big shout out to the San Marcos Visitors Center for the great cooler bags.

If you ever have a Meatup in Washington state, I can probably get some goodies donated for your gift bag. Downside is you couldn't take them home legally…
Kinda fixed that for you ComfortablyNumb BTW, it’s amazing what one can get by TSA in checked luggage or so I hear.

One of the other perks about attending meat ups is the the fact that you run into different experts. texastweeter met me at Cavenders to do some boot shopping. I love me some cowboy boots; they are surprisingly comfortable. I learned a lot about brands and care and devices that make it easier to put them on and take them off. They didn't have my size in my preferred boot, but I'll be ordering a pair online. Plus, I can confess this now that I am away from him and he can't hurt me, I got to spend some time with not just him, but him and his more better half. She is so much more pleasant. And she likes Jiffy, if I remember right.

We are a bit over halfway home here in Amarillo. Still thinking about the great times this past weekend. I was thinking about doing a MeatUp in February in Aspen, CO. I think I could get us a group rate of about $1600 a night double occupancy. I haven't a clue if there is a BBQ joint there or not but we could look.

Doesn’t matter if there are any BBQ places in Aspen. Just have some flown in on one of the attending members’ private jets. And you all deserve to upgrade hotels. I know the Aspen Motel 6’s rates look good at $1600 a night but you all can do better in the $2500+ range. 🙂

Sid P I actually rationalized it by figuring that it’s one less take-off and landing. But that shot was from traffic slowed to a crawl… the seats were hard, not those nice soft plush bus seats… the driver went 55-60 mph when the speed limit between PHL and WBS is either 65 or 70 depending… the bus actually went to a gate, and we had to get our bags off a carousel… and I was pretty damn grouchy when I got home.

Mosca got the better end of the deal. When I got to Dallas, the plane sat on the tarmac for 40 minutes. So I missed my flight. American is saying it is the airports fault. So I am aguing with them about a hotel room. At first they told me it was my fault for booking the flights too close together. I am probably done with American. Until Delta does something stupid.

Dallas is AA homebase. They have always done me right but shesh. He'll that's 2 hours from our house. We went by there on the way home. We could have given you a ride, fed you, put you up in the guest bedroom, and you could have flown out of Tyler tomorrow morning.

I've had American book flights 30 minutes apart, no way. Sorry for your hassle, that sucks.

I feel your pain. My first visit to Dallas before my move, my return Southwest flight from DFW to Birmingham, AL I checked in at 8am at Love Field in Dallas on Monday and was informed that Southworst cancelled my flight but said I was ok because they graciously rebooked me on Thursday ! That was my last flight on Southworst aka Southwest.

I can't say enough about how much SWMBO and I enjoyed getting to know some of the awesome Pit folks. It was an honor and a pleasure (and according to SWMBO, "We're going to the next one").
That said ... sadly, the meatup was marred on the last night by an unfortunate ... and audacious act of thievery. Several folks had brought some favorite bourbons and other excellent spirits for everyone to sample and enjoy, but before that could happen, while no one was looking, the entire collection vanished into thin air right from under our eager noses.
Fortunately, I was able to gain access to the hotel's security cam footage and I believe that the culprit is exposed. To anyone who recognizes or can help to identify the scurrilous bandit, please step forward so that justice can be served.
Here are a few frames from the security footage:

I recognize him, he is the one that cut in line at Burnt Bean and was bleeding so badly. Check local hospital records for his name.

Well we know it isn’t Panhead John because this suspect clearly only has 2 arms while the previous security camera footage of John definitely shows him with 3 arms.

In addition to the leftovers I had, several other attendees who couldn't take their leftovers home gave me theirs. What to do with a mix of BBQ? Charro beans! I used Rancho Gordo Bayo beans for this pot. Plenty of salt from the ham, sausage, and beef - barely had to add anymore and they turned out great!

I had to upload this video I took of the pits at Smitty's. I just found it amazing that there was no firebox and the open fire just drafted into the pit.
