    Howdy folks!

While I may not add anything to comment sections or what have you on this site, I must say that I’ve found it invaluable over the years. All my neighbors, family, etc. who’ve enjoyed the "fruits" of my labor with the old smoker (not to mention myself included) owe basically all of it to this site, and I’m not at all kidding!

Feel I’ve come a long way in my 28 years of age when it comes to smokers... the first one I could call "mine" (i.e., paid for from my own pocket) was a 2011 Walmart-purchased horizontal offset with hardly enough space for even a flat of brisket... but I, always the token Texas kid, dutifully smoked hunk after hunk of meat for all my college buddies to enjoy — and even on the most frigid of northeastern days, I always did so with a smile and beer in hand! Still remember fondly all the constant temperature-monitor glancing, frantic opening/closing of vents, and that whole overall hands-on-approach required by that poorly crafted piece of junk!

Nonetheless I was an Amazing Ribs disciple at that point, so everything I cooked naturally blew the minds of all who were lucky enough to get the chance to partake! And then after graduating, this site eventually also led me to my next smoker: the classic Weber bullet-type (22”-ish model) that I’ve used from 2013 to the present.

So, after checking out the prize page with much enthusiasm I’ve decided to go for the Hasty-Bake, please! And of course, my big heartfelt thanks goes out to the whole Amazing Ribs team for everything—the current prize included (although, I’ve got to say I’m most thankful for the outstanding information you guys have blessed me with over the years through the site and Meathead’s Science of Great Barbecue and Grilling — probably the most referenced book in my entire collection!) So please know how much I appreciate y’al! Keep up the good work and let me know if I need to get you any more info for the prize business!

    Sincerely,
Rick Johnson aka "Texan in SoCal"

I love it, Texan in SoCal , great you started so young!

Sooner or later, someone is going to pick the Snake River Farms package. That would be me, if I ever actually won.

I’m back in TX at the moment to visit the GF and just spoke to FedEx today to schedule delivery of my new Hasty Bake for the day after I return!

That said, each time I return home to TX, I get that itch to abandon SoCal and get back to my roots here... so quite interestingly, the GF and I spent a few days out west in Alpine, TX over the weekend, and I ended up receiving a totally unexpected job offer from their former DA and current city attorney (for a few places out there), so fate may in fact be drawing me back home!

Anyway, to get to the point, the GF and I were staying at his place, and I found something I thought I’d share with y’all... check out his smoker... made from an old mining cart with some creative welding, it’s pretty cool looking. Couldn’t tell you whether it does a decent job or not, but hey, makes for good conversation and gave me a reason to post here. I placed a beer bottle in one of the pics to give a sense of scale. Pretty neat, right?

Next time I’m out there, I might give it a go... lots of wild pigs that need to be controlled, and I’m thinking this bad boy could handle a few baby pigs and maybe the hams of a young sow at once for a test run. So many pigs out there, it couldn’t hurt to experiment.

That thing looks like it needs rails, for sure. I saw that yellow label on the beer bottle, and thought it was a Shiner Bock, but alas, was a Pacifica... LOL Shame on ya, you should be drinking a TEXAS beer when you're here!

Congrats on the win, and enjoy that Hasty Bake!

JoeUser — you’re right on the beer... I kid you not, I was actually holding a Shiner in the other hand as I took that photo. The girlfriend placed her Pacifico on grill after she herself refused to be in the picture for scale purposes (apparently being used as a prop in a picture of a smoker is something she doesn’t appreciate?!?).
