The comments on this topic are making me cry. For all of the bad vibes that go on in the internet, the feelings expressed here about Dan are shining examples that far outweigh all of that negativity.
Dan allowed us to know him well enough to love him. And to miss him.
I especially enjoyed his Pitcast interview. I felt like I knew him and he was a friend. Always a kind word and a quip of dry humor. I just re listened to it and of course I am shedding many tears. I am just starting to wrap my head around this deep loss of a truly wonderful human being.
My sincerest condolences to Eunice and rest of his wonderful family. The world is an emptier place with out him.
RIP. I'm sure for eternity his pit will always hold perfect temperature. Always enjoyed his posts and Huskee thanks so much for sharing the link to his interview. We should all have one of our cookers named the Backyard Cremator.
Terribly sad news. He was quite a character but more importantly, he was a shining example of kindness and generosity in his thoughts, words, and deeds. We are all better people because of him. Sadly, we’re left without a chance to express our gratitude to him in life. However, we can honor him and his memory by continuing to treat others as he would have expected us to. Still hurts though, never expected to feel this way about a guy I never met in person. Guess that’s what made him so special.

Huskee I’m wondering if there is some way that we can take all the love, memories, thoughts, etc about Dan Johnston and share them with Eunice? This post and Mr. Bones post are amazing. The man was well loved and I’m thinking it would be something that Eunice would love to see and read.
I'm not sure if his dear wife is an internet person to read these herself, but we could print these sentiments out and mail them to her if not. I bet she'd enjoy reading through everyon'e thoughts and stories about Dan.
Huskee ..... maybe we can turn them into some sort of a book. Several different easy publishing options exist. Happy to see what I can do to help. If nothing else, printing them so that she has them permanently.
I will always treasure the T-Shirt and apron he sent me. It will have pride of place on the wall in my new smokehouse, and if anyone asks about it, I can tell them it came from one of the good old boys who made my time time on AR fun and interesting. And yes.... the man liked an emoji. Your part of the big smoke now Dan. RIP brother.

I’m newer to the pit than many of you. And I spend much of my time reading and asking questions versus posting in large part because I believe that I still have so much to learn from the giants of the backyard on this site.
I knew Dan only through his posts and emojis…as I know all of you. I never got to meet him, which is sad to me because he seemed like such a collaborative, community oriented and giving man. However, I do know his work because he, along with many of you, have created and now maintain what to me is a special community on the internet. I couldn't agree with @fzxdoc's post more.
And I think @KevinG’s sentiment about expressing gratitude in life is important. So in honor of Dan, I’d like to take the opportunity to express my gratitude.
I’m grateful for all of you who have taken the time to build this community, whether it be via administering the website, running the monthly drawing (may my name be drawn sometime), drawing the cartoons, writing the newsletter, recording the podcasts, and posting words of wisdom or support (or even humor, suggestions for good music or alternative pronunciations of wibs).
Thanks to you all - and in this moment particularly to Dan - to all of the time and effort you have taken to build this community. In honor of Dan, I will smoke this week a set of patta negra ribs and a whole chicken (and maybe something else or two) for friends. And they will turn out better because of the collective wisdom and support from this community.
Dan was one of the people I immediately came to recognize by his posts here on AR. I wish I'd been here long enough to read more of them. He'll be sorely missed, but will probably be taking a break from his heavenly barbecuing to look in and try to add a bunch of emoji's to a post.
Myself and my Kiwi friend always go to Brainerd, MN for sports car racing in late August. Three years ago, I got the idea to stop by and meet Dan on our way by. Dan loved the idea. We got there around lunchtime, and Dan showed us his collection of BBQ equipment in the back yard. He then got all of us in his truck and took us downtown to a BBQ food truck that had started up that year.
He absolutely refused to let us pay for lunch, remarking that Fargo was his town and he was paying. He said that when he came to Winnipeg, we could pay.
We only spent about 90 minutes with him, as we had more traveling to do, but in that time, we knew Dan was our friend.
Circumstances prevented us from stopping by over the last two years, but I will always remember Dan fondly.
