If I decide to do this route, (prob'ly will
), I'll find a food grade one, sans liner, methinks!
I know lots of folks in Food Service, so barrels are almost too easy to get...
Yer makin' it awfully difficult to resist th' Siren Song!!!
Enjoy yer well-earned repast, Brother!

Looking forward to your story brother! One word of caution with food containers. I read that red liners are a biotch to remove if you can remove them at all. Get a tan one like mine. A burn, a tool or three, and some labor and your down to metal. And resting easy...

I also got a coat of Rust Oleum engine enamel black gloss on the drum. To recap, I burned out and removed the liner (you don't want to cook in that) and burned out and removed the outside non-high temp paint. You don't have to remove the outside paint but you may smell it burning while your cooking. Who wants to smell that?
The inside will be seasoned but the outside got painted with two coats of high temp primer and will have two coats of high temp engine enamel. Here's the first coat of engine paint on the drum.

By the way. I decided I wanted a wider circumference charcoal basket to even the heat throughout the drum when smoking. So I cut three inches off the top of the expanded metal with a jig saw and bi-metal blade. I then cut those into 6" - 7"" pieces and added to the length of the 12" expanded metal pieces. This increase the diameter from approximately 13" inches to 16" inches.
I also added an 8" stainless Eye Bolt to the center of the basket so I can raise and lower the basket with my fire pit rake.
