Rain and thunderstorms this morning. UGH! I wanted to get out to the shop and put a full damned day in!

Anyways, yesterday I did get quite a lot done, I guess. Spent a couple of hours marking up the tank, drawing all my lines, etc. Then the plasma to get the ends cut out. Collector end you saw above.

    Firebox end.

For the collector, I set it up next to the tank on a couple of pipe stands and got it semi-level to match up to the tank. I didn't have the curvature down when having the collector pieces cut out, so I knew I was going to need to trim the collector to fit the tank. I was looking around the shop for a big piece of cardboard, to use to mock up to the end of the tank, then transfer to the collector to cut it. But, unfortunately, we put all our cardboard boxes in the fire barrel every few weeks and haven't accumulated any lately. I was kicking myself for not thinking of this earlier and bringing a piece of carboard out with me.

Of course, you're probably laughing at me right now, thinking, "What a dolt!" And you'd be right... all along, the perfect template piece was staring me right in the face!

The piece I JUST cut out of that tank head! DEEEEEERRRRRRRRP! Duh! Yeah, I can be a bit dense sometimes, I know.

So I transferred that pattern onto the top and bottom pieces of my collector.

After that, it was a simple matter of cutting it to shape, taking the grinder and knocking it down and smoothing it out.

It doesn't fit up perfectly yet, as I've still got to trim the sides. They're not perfectly straight up and down on the tank, because of the bulbous nature of it, so I've got to put a gentle curve into the vertical sides, too, as well as the top and bottom. No biggie, though, this is probably 1/2" or so trimmed out. Then it'll be ready to mate up and weld into the tank.

Then it's on to the firebox. This is always the most difficult part of a build, I think. Sliding that firebox into the tank, pulling it back out, grinding the edges of the tank to improve the fitup, and repeating the process. Over and over and over and over until you get it fit in there like a glove. Trying to do it outside on unlevel ground is hell. My buddy doesn't want me grinding in the shop, due to dust everywhere and it being as dirty as it is already, so I have to mark things, pull everything apart, pull the tank outside, grind a bit, then bring it all back inside (where there's a level floor) set it all back up and try to fit it together, mark areas the need trimmed or ground again, and repeat the process. It can be painful. But, it's got to be done - once it's fit up together nicely, then I can secure it in place with some heavy tacks to hold it there.

This is how it fits up, pics from a previous build:

With a firebox that weighs... oh, 350lbs or more, trying to line it up and hold it in place, pulling it in and out over and over, grind a bit, fit up, pull it out, grind some more... ugh. You can imagine.

Anyways, to do this, I'll have to put the rear axle on the firebox, as well. And then work on the shelf that's going to come off that under the tank, too, so maybe I need to do all that before I try to mount the firebox. Since I can set it upside down to weld that stuff... hrrmmm yeah, I think so. Gotta get that all right so I know the height, then have the parts for the front axle and support cut, as well.

Ok, maybe not fitting up the firebox today. Between the rain and this other stuff, sounds like I've got a few more things to do first. See how it is? lol. I have to talk my way through this stuff with ya'll, or else I forget sumthin'. lol

Anyways, gonna be a busy weekend, if I can ever get OUT there and get to work!

As I was reading this I thought it might be a good idea to mount some fold down or detachable wheels to your stand to make it easier to move, but mounting the axle might be better.

Yeah, if I mount the axle and wheels, then I can roll it in and out and then just support the front end when I get it in place. I usually use a little jack for that.

Sadly, looks like more rain is going to keep me out of the shop today. I haven't gotten a drop here, but my buddy said they got torrential rain a little while ago, and a big system is moving in now which looks like it's going to be several hours passing through. <sigh> So it looks like no work will likely get done today.

Got the rear axle welded on today and ground some of the corners into bevwls, like the collector. I dodnt do all of it because I didnt want to set it up on the wheels yet. The lugnuts with my hubs arent long enough to tighten down once they sink into the holes in the wheels, so I didnt want to risk the weight sitting on it and gallong up my threads. So I ordered some longer lugnuts on Amazon, they'll be here tomorrow , supposedly. I also rattlecanned the bottom black so it wouldnt rust all to hell, since I'm essentially done with the bottom of the firebox.

Had to come home to get ready for a concert tonite. Then tomorrow it's welding on the collector and starting to fit up the firebox to the tank, getting measurements to have my front axle mount cut, welding that on and I'll be ready to assemble it and have it off the ground for good.

Making slow progress, but getting there. It's a muddy quagmire out there, so that has held me up. 2 inches of standing water out by my metal plate stack, sheesh!

      Fitup, rmeove, grind.

      Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

Now totnale it all down and weld this collector up while rolling the tank so I can get decent welds (I hope!). Then head to the office for the afternoon and back out here late afternoon to test fit the firebox into the tank and do the same thing...

      Fitup. Remove. Grind.

      Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

      Over and over and over...

Get test height measurements and have my front axle box cut this evening, and tomorrow weld it on and weld the firebox in.

      We're moving now!

Got the collector welded up. Welds came out ok - not fabulous, but decent enough I thnk I can leave them and probably not have to grind them to look smooth. Overall it's coming together. Had to come home, shower and heading in to see some folks in the office, then back out to spend the rest of the afternoon working on the tank fitup and such.

I'm really enjoying it now. The beginning is a grind (no pun intended!), then when things start coming together, it starts to take shape and I have more of a 'picture' in my mind and in front of my of how it's coming out, it's more enjoyable and I find myself itching to get back out to the shop and get more work done.

I'm debating the moniker... I think I have an idea, but I'm going to wait a while before it's official. We'll see if my vision of the final product holds up when she's in the final stages. But it's definitely taking shape now.

Led to crappy looking welds, as I had to bridge that gap. Not a major deal, I'll grind those down to be flush and it won't be really noticeable, underside of the tank, under the collector.

Drilled the 3/4" hole for the pivot point on the axle for steerage.

        I'm an idiot. I mean, seriously. Who calculates A2 + C2 = B2??? Morons, that's who. It's A2 + B2 = C2. Duh. Everyone knows that. Everyone.

Except the moron who did it wrong. Not pointing any fingers here, but... someone in this thread needs a math refresher. And my wife teaches the maths, so... that obviously wouldn't be ME. No, sir. And no way that woulda let to cutting wrong parts, fitting them together and then head scratching for 10 minutes before figuring out the problem and starting over. Again - no, sir.

Then took some scrap plate over to my CNC guy and spent an hour redesigning my front support/pivot for this smoker and tank and height, etc., only to find out I didn't bring a large enough piece of material. I'm going to have to get some out of the metal pile.

Which has about 2" of standing water around it last I looked.

Which means I can't get the tractor back there to get it.

Which means... yeah, gonna have to wait for things to dry out some, which means likely this weekend before I get this thing on 4 wheels.

Which means... yeah, I'm annoyed, if you can't tell.

Got the firebox up on wheels, got the edges ground to bevels, matching the collector - no good pics of that, sorry.

Spent the rest of the last 2 days running around, getting metal to my CNC guy, getting parts cut, measuring and perfecting size, then drilling a bunch of holes in things (you'll see) and then putting on wheels and tires, etc. It's been a bit of a pain, but now... now I am FINALLY ready to get this thing up on wheels. I have to mount the front axle support on the tank, then it will sit on the axle, and then I can get it up in the air and move the firebox into the shop to do the fit, remove, grind, wash, rinse, repeat drill. That'll be Thurs afternoon and Friday working on that. It'll definitely be on wheels and welded together permanently by Friday evening or Saturday morning.

          For real this time. lol

<edit> And I had to pick that firebox up when it fell on it's face and get it back upright for that pic - this MF is HEAVY. Oh mama. I cannot WAIT to get it fully assembled so I can pull this thing around instead of use the tractor.

Definitely makes it easier to move around, and I don't give myself a hernia every time. Don't have to use the tractor to move it in and out anymore, either.

This is front to back (East to West), but I didn't measure side to side (N to S). I don't know if it's off 1/2" over 2 feet N to S, but 1/2 over 4 feet E to W is the distance between the axles.

So I took my front axle support back to my CNC guy and we recut them 1½" shorter. Lotta finagling on that, but I think we got it mostly right.

Tomorrow morning I'll pull it all back in and then shim the wheels to get all 4 at the same height, weld on the front axle support and then level everything and start trimming and grinding the firebox opening on the tank to get proper fitup. Then I can tack it and weld it out. And the thing will be on four wheels for good.

Making progress. Suckage, though - tomorrow I want to go out early and get a bunch done before it gets stupid hot, but I have to leave, go home midmorning and shower and clean up to go to a funeral for one of my patients, then go back and out and work the afternoon. I wish they'd done the funeral early, but they didn't ask my input to make sure it didn't come right in the middle of my worktime in the shop.

We'll see how it all goes, though.

I purposely built this out of three legs knowing it would wobble with 4 legs on the flattest surface. Don't worry, I have it leaning on the vice in case any critters come through.

And yes, it's open at the bottom. Allows a little (theoretical) updraft from cooler air in the bottom of the tank flowing backward from the collector end upwards due to the movement of heat and air up as it exits the firebox, and also allows for scraping the inside of the baffle to allow debris to fall to the bottom of the tank.

For now, I'm recovering. Whew. What a day, now I need some sleep. I might even take tomorrow off, I don't know. We'll see how I feel after 7 or 8 hours horizontal.

I do want to mention, I know Jerod Broussard was observing about my CNC-owning friend. I actually did a large part of the cutting of parts this time myself. Everything for the firebox except the hinges and handles and the circular plates inside the intake. But the inner firebox pipe, the outer firebox shell, the circular inserts for the inner pipe and the circular cutouts for the end faces, etc. Did it all myself with my new Primeweld CUT 60 plasma and my circle cutting jig. I was pretty proud of myself. Not as good a job as my buddy Charley would have done, but better than I could have done before. I'm happy with this new plasma, for sure. Just wish I had a steadier hand, lol. Freehanding stuff is horrific. lol

I took yesterday off to recover from Saturday's heat because I'm a big wuss. Then watched the OKC Thunder take the NBA Championship last night, this afternoon I'll probably go out and work on welding up the firebox, or on the exhaust or something. I'll wait to cut the door until I have all the welding done on the tank.

Overall, I'm just not sure about it. I'm just not sure about the proportions, about the size of the cook chamber compared to that massive insulated firebox, etc.

We'll see once it's all done. I'm really not sure, but I'm hoping there's enough cook chamber space to make this worthwhile. It's gonna be strange at least, the door is likely to be only 24" wide, but the grates will be almost 30" deep. Definitely need sliding grates. I will probably only build 2 grates, but likely do 3 levels, so the owner can choose the height of the upper shelf, based on whatever they're cooking that day. I don't know though. I am probably going to put a small folding side shelf on it, since there was no room for a lower shelf under the tank. Not and allow the wheels to move for turning, anyways.

Still haven't settled on things. Still researching paint, trying to decide where I'm going to go with that...

Fun to see the build and progress! Just a hint from someone who’s built a similar smoker: with a food chamber that size (tall), you will most likely have big temp differences on the two shelves, so depending on how your baffle directs air inside the food chamber you may want to think about shelf placement. Regardless, slideout shelves is great.

Yes, I am likely going to do 3 or possibly even 4 rack heights so the eventual owner can move them up and down however they like. At least 3 this time, I think.
