    Learned something on Father’s Day

Specifically, I now have a new rule. No barefoot grilling! Most especially charcoal grilling!

Setting up the Weber and SNS for smash burgers with the Drip ‘N Griddle, and had some left over coals that I mixed with new coals in the chimney. Got it going good, and dumped into the SNS. Well... to make a long story short, a number of small sparking red hot coals escaped to the concrete as I dumped the coals, and I stepped on them. And took off hopping through the grass.... finally scraping them off my feet! Those suckers burned and my 200+ pounds of weight made them stick to my feet good! Then I jumped in the shallow end of the pool, which didn’t help much. I went inside and put my shoes on my sore feet before approaching the Performer again!

It’s gonna be a fun week with 1 burn on the bottom of 1 foot and 3 on the other!

Oh man, using my chimney with sandles keeps me on my toes.

Ouch! Lol. Also, don't dump charcoal when wearing sandals or barefoot because those little meteorites hurt the top of your feet too!

Yep, top of your feet would be an issue too! I put on my sneakers. Funny thing is I had put my shirt on (we were swimming) to grill as I didn’t want to have hot grease popping on me. I know I looked like a fool running around the yard trying to get those coals off my feet too! 😂

It was the little left over coals that did me in I think, as some of them started falling through the chimney when I picked it up.

This is called learning from burning.. 🔥
Hope it only was minor burns..

I'm surprised I've only gotten myself twice with this since I basically don't wear shoes at home. And every time I'm out in the pit area playing with charcoal barefoot i'm thinking "Put some damn shoes on ya big dummy". Or I'm wearing flip-flops, but I've somehow managed to not get the tops of my feet. Yet.

I cook all the time with just my shorts on.

I don't use those coals. I always sweep them into the ash catcher and start with new ones. If they are big enough I toss them in the bottom of the SnS. Hope your ok.

These were the left over coals that were in the SNS, but too big to fall through the charcoal grate, but they started burning down and crumbling as they burned. I had shoveled them into the chimney before I topped it off with new charcoal.

I feel your pain! I've done the exact same thing a couple times. It ended up a victory though because it got my wife to admit that there IS a good reason for having well callused feet....charcoal armor!

Pure Aloe is your best friend jfmorris. I roll the dice every time I'm out there in my sandals because I just won't take a minute to put shoes on.

My concrete patio is in direct sun most of the day and being in Mississippi it stays so hot all day long I would never make it to the grill before I would have burns on the bottom of my feet. Needless to say I always wear shoes while grilling. Ouch, hope your feet are Ok jfmorris

Well, its mostly looking like nice big blisters today, wearing socks and tennis shoes for sure until they heal up.

What's funny is that I am a home brewer, and learned the lesson to not brew barefoot quite a few years ago, when I was using a smaller pot (7 gallon turkey fryer pot), and had a boil over occur while barefoot. I've gotten lax as I now brew in a 15.5 gallon pot and pretty much never have boil overs... Just never thought about foot protection in relationship to the grills.

You just need more practice on walking on hot coals:

Haha, yeah, I told the wife and kids that I walked on hot coals to cook my own Father's Day dinner! They didn't want me to cook, but I insisted as I actually ENJOY it, and find it relaxing. Most of the time anyway!

Ouch, been there too! Still chance it, but I’ll put gloves on when dumping my chimney. 🤔 A couple years ago I had crocs on and a hot piece dropped in a hole thru the top! Couldn’t kick it out, and had them strapped on! Won’t wear those anymore... heal up, man!

jfmorris My worst burn happened homebrewing. I was using an Igloo cooler as a mash tun. I had removed the spigot and replaced it with a rubber bung. While carrying it the bung came out and the hot wort ran down my leg into my rubber boot. Second degree burns all down my leg. I had to call for help to finish the brew while pouring cold water on my wounds before going the hospital for treatment.

Wow! That is some dedication - that you finished the brew before going to the hospital! My mash tun has a stainless ball lock valve in place of the original drain, and worst I've done was forget to close it when I added strike water... it was on the ground at the time thankfully.

Wow! Way too rich for my blood ComfortablyNumb ! I'm brewing with a keggle on a Bayou Classic square burner, and fermenting in carboys in a fridge with a temp controller. That stuff sure is nice though!

This does bring up an important point.

If you cook with live fire on a deck, you have to be very careful. My wife had a small coal drop on the deck a few years ago. It lodged in the crack between two boards where it burnt through them. We were lucky it did not catch fire and ruin our day.

Good point! If I ever had any grill on a wood deck I would put something under it. Right now I am having more issues with my gas grill and grease drips from the grease tray assembly than I am with the charcoal. The pressure washer won't get those grease stains off once it hits the concrete.
