The SJ is definitely going to be for direct grilling only. If I am going to smoke something, it will enough meat for leftovers and that immediately takes me into 22" kettle or PBC territory. (Burgers might be the only exception.)
I don't have a problem with the side vents either. It's perfect when I want something to fire up quickly for burgers or kebabs for just the two of us. I used it indirect for the first time recently (thanks for the tip, Mr. Bones) to do a beef tenderloin. It turned out wonderfully.
