What Are You Cooking On - 2023 Survey

Every 3-4 years or so I post a requested survey of what everyone is cooking on out there. This is interesting to me to see how trends change over the years. If you folloow any of my posts you know I am going through a nearly complete change over myself, not only my style of cooking but what I cook on.

Here's the results of the survey from 2019.....

and after a couple of years I ran the survey again in 2021. Interesting to see the results.....

Now obviously it would be ridiculous to list every type of cooker, but for the categories of popular ones mentioned, tell me what you are cooking on MOST in 2023. Please, no long winded explanation of how you rotate from one to the other, just which one is your most frequent go to cooker. Said differently if you had to get rid of all but one, which one would it be?

Good idea Steve! I think it might be time to add standalone gas griddles to the list though, as they’ve exploded in popularity the last few years. I use that as much as my kettle.

Youre right John. Back a few years ago they weren’t even on the radar. Just added to the survey. Good catch.👍

Short winded explanation: gasser cause it’s most convenient, not necessarily the most tasty.

JCBBQ with the kamado vote! Love it. It’s definitely going to be your go-to this summer.

I use the WSCG the most, which qualifies as a kamado, but I use the travel SnS almost as often so that tipped the scale to charcoal grill(s).

However, I also like to use my..........

smokenoob I do have the travel pellet, but don't use it often. I do use the heck out of the SnS travel kettle, both at home and away. It's great cooking for 2.

Troutman the LSG pellet pooper is a very close third, but the others are only used sporadically and for a specific purpose. The LSG stick burner is the by far the most expensive and least used of the squadron, but I'll be damned if I'll ever part with it. I'm doing picanha steaks on the SMG this afternoon.

Ah, but the extra wind was invited by the OP. That's free wind in my book!

Use my santa maria most. Not sure where my cabinet fits in. Under vertical drum or charcoal.

Memphis pellet grill is just too convenient with good results. I pull out the Weber kettle for high temps like searing a steak.

I'ma kettle guy for smoking. Every so often I'm tempted by the ease of a pellet rig but the stories of jammed augurs or, in the case of my cousin's the other week a fire and I realize I just don't want to mess with a rig that has points of failure like that. Kettles are simple - light charcoal. Adjust vents, put food on grill and wood on coals.

Jammed auger? Not if you keep your fuel dry.

Fire? Not if you RTFM and know what to do if you ever experience a flameout (I never have).

Point of failure? User error 99% of the time.

On dry pellets... it was very warm and sunny the last week or so. Oops, now there's some overnight rain and it's humid. I live in Seattle, it's often damp, what can i say? Not sure about the fire but if you've been here for awhile (and you both have) you've read of people having issues with their pellet grills. I don't see a reason to use a cooker that has mechanical and electrical failure points and puts out food with lighter smoke than I want vs a simple kettle.

I admit that living in a wet climate would present more of a challenge to a pellet rig owner than say, some place high and dry like Colorado. Avoiding a post flameout (or any improper shutdown) flare up however is a different story. That’s easy to avoid regardless of where you live.

I’ll also concede that a pellet cooker is more complex to operate than a kettle … or is it really? I’ve owned and thoroughly enjoyed both … with just a little effort in both cases.

I use my MAK the most, I think even if I had a gasser that would likely still remain the case.

This is a cool survey. The Genesis gets the most use in the house as it’s the only grill my wife uses. I use it a lot in conjunction with the Silverbac, which is the one I use the most. I don’t really have time for charcoal during the week as I’m back in the office three days a week and my kids have sports schedules again.

This brings up another point - when I say I use a kettle the most, I mean "when I grill or smoke" which is usually once a week when the weather is decent. Other people do what you do and use their grills etc several times a week and the survey doesn't capture that difference.

Although there are set up’s I really want, I’m grateful to have the simple Weber’s for now< someday I will join in some of the finer cookers out there,
