I noticed the Weber cubes are super popular here. I've used them, but these cubes are substantially cheaper and work just as well. Amazon prices the Rutland at 14.8 cents a cube, while the Weber cubes are 21 cents a cube.

Around here there is plenty of hot air from local politicians. I wonder if that would start the charcoal.

I know I'm late to the discussion here but... when you use a cube (Weber or whatever) in your chimney, do you put the cube UNDER the bottom of the chimney or do you put it IN the chimney where the charcoal goes? Have at it fellas...

It'll work jus fine, either way, UncaBuddha
Have done both, most often do under, with some wadded up, grease-stained fast food bag wadded up in th concavity of th chimley bottom
Good place to drizzle used cookin oil, on th bags, as well...
Set a cube on th grate of my Smokey Joe, let it ignite, gently set yer chimley down over it.
If'n I'm outta cubes, I jus use th bag(s), an go round th bottom holes with a propane torch...
It's all good, ya'll come out jus fine, either way, Brother.Last edited by Mr. Bones; November 2, 2021, 06:54 PM.

I jus responded with how I now do it, (out of habit)...
No science, jus some experience, experimentin, stewardship, an practicality.

Then one day I while cleaning my at the time COS with paper towels. I saw the paper towels full of drippings and thought maybe this will work. Oh yes, the drippings are just

Pit Barrel Cooker
Grilla Grills Chimp
W.C. Bradley & Co. Char Kettle CK-115 ~1980s Vintage Grill (inactive)
I stopped using the cubes a long time ago. I just squirt lighter fluid all over the coals until they look like they are about to swim away. It's amazing how this get you that distinctive early 1980s BBQ-Petroleum taste.
(I'm joking. Really. I think the last time I used lighter fluid was 2005ish and then only once.)
