Cool! I really like the idea of these side by side tests. I would like to see this test performed with a number of brands. While enjoying the read I found the summary fairly anecdotal with limiting themselves to only two different brands and 10 coworkers. Hopefully it inspires more taste tests in the future! Tournament style subjectively “best” lump vs subjectivity “best” briquettes. Maybe we could get a bracket going here! 🤔💡

Interesting .... although I'm not really sure I've noticed a significant taste difference between the two. But I haven't run side by side, either.
I typically use Kingsford or Cowboy Brand briquettes and I typically use Fogo Premium Lump.Last edited by ecowper; July 13, 2023, 06:15 PM.

I would use briquettes on my Weber (when I had it) for the reason it burns longer and more consistently than lump. Now I use lump to create a coal bed on my offset before I add sticks, for the reason that the lump creates less ash than briquettes. Never noticed a difference in flavor when I had the Weber.

I’ve never really thought about this. However, if there is a difference in taste, I wonder if there’s a variable regarding people associating briquettes w their childhood memories or grilling. I assume the vast majority of adults, if they’ve been exposed to charcoal grilling, have never had food cooked w lump. IDK, maybe there is a smell that’s different? 🤷♂️
