I couldn't figure anywhere else this should go, so it's here. We had our family reunion today. We still haven't "recovered" to pre pandemic levels, but we still had a great time. Our parents generation started he reunion 60 + years ago, and we have had it every year since with the exception of 2 pandemic years.
The generation that started the tradition is all gone, and cousins have started leaving us too, but the youngest generation is more than making up for those who have gone. The oldest cousin is now 96, and was here and still able to fend for herself, if a bit more slowly now.
I only took one photo, and that was of the spread:
The desert table is behind the two people at the far end of the food table.

Smoked Buffalo Butterball Turkey Breast and akorn squash. Went with 2 smoker boxes of mesquite. Afternoon storms ran us inside, so the turkey breasts were finished off in the oven.

Nothing fancy but still tasty! Costco chicken wings and some dirty rice dressing. Did everything inside, too damn hot today. Baked everything in the oven.
Sprayed with duck fat and sprinkled some Tony’s on em.
My homemade dirty rice……please note…it’s Fancy!
Did half sauced and half dry….darned good!

Here in Washington, we cook outside when it is too hot so as not to heat up the house.

Here in Houston, most of us have those new fangled fancy shmancy insulated ovens. 🥸Last edited by Panhead John; July 17, 2023, 06:01 AM.

Smokin-It 3D
Weber Kettle with an SNS
Masterbuilt kettle that I call the $30 wonder grill
Bullet by Bull Grills gasser
Anova WiFi sous vide machine
Thermoworks Thermapen and Chef Alarm
Chicken and veggies on the gasser with Hank’s Pork and Chicken rub, served with a roasted beet and arugula salad. This salad is just top notch! Homemade balsamic vinaigrette with crumbled goat cheese and pecans.
also used my new grill pan for the first time. It’s a Weber stainless grill pan, really liked it. Easy to clean, charred up the veggies nicely.

Brats n’ Tots, my third bachelor meal while Mari Jo visits family in WI.
I saw these Kirkland brats while in Costco Friday, a package of 14, and thought I’d give them a test drive. I normally am a brat minimalist, spicy brown mustard only, but decided to embellish these. After boiling in a Tripel, I finished them on my Weber gasser. Put them in a toasted and buttered bun and topped with spicy brown mustard, caramelized onions and cherry peppers. These Ore-Ida mini tots are extra crispy and delicious. Not bad for a solo flight.

So, I resorted to the even more unthinkable ... figuring out how to cook them indoors in a manner that (hopefully!) is virtually indistinguishable from the real deal.
I have to say that these (and yesterday's) have come pretty close to hitting that mark ... and they were both cooked in an Instant Pot then seared under the oven broiler.
Frankly, I had to do this second batch:
... because I couldn't believe that the first one turned out as well as it did ... so I just had to see if I could do it twice.
To badly misquote my first old golf instructor, "In this game, consistency is everything ... unless we're talking about that swing of yours. That, we gotta fix first, boy."
At least the ribs were good, the recipe is locked in for future use, and (fortunately!) my wrist still hurts too bad for me go out and face that "swing" of mine ...

ComfortablyNumb - Thanks ... and Arthritis? Got it (osteo)! Check!

fzxdoc - Thanks, Kathryn. The wrist is much better (and Valsarten is my new favorite topical med). The IP is back in the pantry … ready for the next injury or bout of hopelessly inclement weather.
The worst part of this little episode is that SWMBO liked the ribs enough to look for more when shopping and to remind me on occasion that “you don’t even have to smoke them”. That’s troubling 😳.

Hog fat tortillas de harina:
I need these for tomorrow, so I need to restrain myself so I don't just eat them all.
And Little Cookin' Buddy is barely underfoot at all:
She was very disappointed that there was no Floor Chicken. I've created a monster, a tiny, adorable monster, but a monster nonetheless.

hoovarmin These are flour, so they reheat very well and they'll last a couple days at room temp. Hand made corn tortillas don't reheat nearly as well as machine made, for whatever reason. so for corn it's best to just make what you need and turn any leftovers into chilaquiles or migas, or enchiladas or whatever the next day.

This was supposed to be a breakfast cook for early dinner yesterday, but while the bacon was cooking I realized the eggs were way out of date so I grabbed 2 frozen patties... then I wanted to make some hash browns for the burger to try and keep it breakfasty... we only had country style homefries... so I caramelized some onions instead.
I very much like this new table, though Im gonna have to buy some storage bins for it. That should free up some storage inside the house as well.
