Hey I am a disable veteran, (2001) USMC if you're curious I'm trying to make my first experience cooking outdoors as smooth as possible so I would like to know if anybody is disabled and sets on a mobility scooter or electric wheelchair and does outdoor cooking. I could purchase a electric smoker but not challenged enough. plus I like the taste of charcoal grilling and I want to know what equipment or setup you have?... this will help me decide what equipment to purchase for a successful first time out door cook with charcoal. I've looked at WSM 22 1/2 but middle looks like it might be awkward and heavy to pick up. help if you can.........semper fi

Thank you for your service and sacrifice, Brother. I feel like a good 'ol Weber 22 could be easily modified to suit your needs. There are a lot of accessories and add-ons available, and the height could be easily adjusted if needed. It is a very good, versatile and inexpensive cooker.

I'm with Mike. A kettle would be easy to make lower. With that and a Slow N Sear you can smoke and grill. If you can afford it, add a digital leave in thermometer with at least two probes, (one for the meat and one to monitor pit temperature). A Drip N Griddle will help you maintain temps. ABCBBQ.COM has lots of info on grillin' and smokin', Of course, you are on the premier bbq site on the 'net right now.
And thank you for both your service and your sacrifice. It's people like you who make it possible for the rest of us to pursue passions like this.

Glad to meet you brother! Retired Army here .... spent some time in the sandbox in 90-91 and The Mog in 93-94.
I think a great starting point would be, as others have said, a Weber kettle with slow n sear. Can do about 80% of what a Hasty-Bake can do, much less expensive, and much easier to modify .... bet you could find someone local to you that could fabricate a workstation for a Weber that would bring it to a more convenient height.
If you can afford it, you might seriously consider a Hasty-Bake. The firebox is tended through a door on one side of the grill. The firebox can be raised and lowered with a pretty easy handle that you crank in circles. And the cover opens easily, looks to me like the grill itself might be at a pretty convenient height.
Take a look at the Hasty-Bake Legacy .... that front work table is removable. And you can buy a side work table for not too much.

I don't have a Hasty Bake like ecowper suggests, but I do have a Weber kettle and I can vouch for its versatility and ease of access with a SnS. Whatever you end up with, post pictures so we can see what magic you've done with it.
Semper Fi, and welcome to the Pit.

I' m not only thinking of the versatility with the mods of a Weber 22 but also it should be ok in the cleaning dept. Ya not only just cook, but ya hafta clean the mess. When I was coming out of spine surgery I was able to do the cleaning from a chair, being I didn't have the ability to stand up at the time. The cookin was the easy part.

well cleaning is one of a Marine's duties so no problem there and thanks I was wondering if anyone would say if they had the experience of dealing with the Weber 22 while in a chair much thanks

P.S. Georgia rookie 903 , My recovery was approx 18 mos of chair duty with the cleaning, so it wasn't just a 1 week thing.

NEXT PURCHASE
Custom charcoal box for offset (probably this year)
Pellet pooper or a kamado or a Santa Maria
First - thank you for your service! A couple of thoughts for you, with a mobility scooter or wheelchair you may want to look at a small kamado style cooker on a custom height table. An insulated kamado style does not get nearly as hot on the outside as a weber or other non-insulated grill, meaning you can get much closer with your legs in the seated position and not have to worry so much about contacting the surfaces. Also, a kamado is extremely versatile and would let you enjoy charcoal grilling and smoking with a single cooker. The table can be as inexpensive (2x4 pine) or expensive (teak and marble) as your budget but it lets you cook at a height made just for you. Also you may be able to customize it so that your scooter can partially move underneath part of the table (think like a desk) which would let you get very close to the smoker without exposing your legs to hot food and other hazards.

I would also agree that the Weber performer would be a great choice. They are easily modified and the side table would be a great add-on for you to set gear, food and what ever else you need. As others have said, there is a whole world of accessories and modifications that can be made to this set up as well. Being on a stable base, the performer can easily be moved around without worry of it tipping over, like some kettles.
Good luck on your search and let us know if there is anything else we can help with. Please gives us the heads up on what you end up with.
Thank you for your service to our country.
