Fun thread. Congratulations on the new cooker!. I have a Weber with the SnS 2.0 and the Vortex since I was unable to resist Panhead John egging me on . I have to admit the Vortex is a great addition
First cook! Simple green chile cheeseburgers. Click Akaushi ground beef (my last bit of Click meat!) done 2-zone style. Bottom line up front: mine was very good but my lovely bride reckoned hers was overdone. Pretty sure I know why... read on.
Fortunately the charcoal chimney I'd ordered arrived in the afternoon so it was a snap to get the coals going. I must say, it gave me some primal satisfaction to see a fire...!
And I have a great view from the kitchen table:
And away we go:
Sear step: once the burgers hit about 150F/65C, moved them to the hot side and flipped twice, a minute each. Temps did not exceed about 158F/70C.
Then the cheese melting back on the indirect side.
Served with the beef-based black bean charro I've been messing with the past few days. They're only OK - definitely not as good as the pork-based version we usually make. So that experiment is done and we'll stick to the latter going forward.
Two reasons why my lovely bride's burger left her unimpressed: first, hers is the one on the right in the above pics and you can see how it split a little bit, exposing more surface area. Second, I'd accounted for all the expected temperature changes EXCEPT the final step of putting the burgers back on the indirect side to melt the cheese. They undoubtedly kept cooking some, and I failed to measure the temps right when I started the melt step and again as I took them off the grill. Lesson learned.
Next up is a rack of spare ribs tomorrow, low and slow... wish me luck

I have noticed your gas meter in the back ground Please check to make sure that the vent on the regulator is clear and if there is a chance that it could be extended higher over your head with extension tubing. Just checking!
I really appreciate your sharp eye! Yep, that's all good, that regulator is only a couple of years old, part of a mod when we converted our fireplace from wood-burning to gas. So although it sure won't win any beauty contests, the whole thing passed county inspection at that time. Believe me, I have an extremely healthy respect for any such possibilities!
Edit: Whoops, I mistook which regulator you meant - clearly the one in the pic on the previous page shows the original reg on the main feed from the ground. Nevertheless, it did all pass county inspection in the recent past. Thanks again.
Real fire! I must admit that seeing all those shiny new toys has my MCS flaring up. Have fun with your spare ribs today, I'm looking forward to seeing your results and observations.
