OK looks aside it seems like they've innovated a bit with the new ash catch system and vent system. Maybe it's not pretty but I bet it is still a pretty good cooker.
I'm a little befuddled why they are going after the BGE in their marketing though. Sure the price point is similar but I didn't think PK's cooked like Kamados. Any PK owners want to chime in on that?
Scotch: Current favorite- The Arran (anything by them), Glenmorangie 12yr Lasanta, sherry cask finished. The Balvenie Double Wood, also like Oban 18yr, and The Glenlivet Nadurra (Oloroso sherry cask finished) among others. Neat please.
About meReal name: Aaron
Location: Farwell, Michigan - near Clare (dead center of lower peninsula).
Occupation:
Healthcare- Licensed & Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) at MyMichigan Health, a University of Michigan Health System.
Cookers:
Large Big Green Egg with a Ceramic Grill Store rack system, and the SnS setup.
Weber Genesis SA-E-330 LP INDIGO with SS Grates, Weber Crafted frame kit, baking stone, griddle (2/3), all from Ace Hardware.
For the first time in a long time I have no kettles as I gave them all away.
Everything Else:
SnS #3 with certificate. I was their first customer.
Sous Vide equipment.
SnS and Thermoworks instant read and leave-in thermometers.
Grill Grates for BGE.
Kingsford Blue Bag, Weber lighter cubes, Weber charcoal chimneys.
Rubs with salt: Meat Church Holy Cow.
Rubs without salt: Home-mixed versions of previously sold SnS Grills Rocky's Rub and Not Just for Beef using their recipe. SPOG.
Spices: Lots of 'em.
Large Big Green Egg, Weber Performer Deluxe, Weber Smokey Joe Silver, Fireboard Drive, 3 DigiQs, lots of Thermapens, and too much other stuff to mention.
All grills are boxes with fire inside. Why is this $900 firebox better than another $900 firebox?
I see a lot to like here, but comparatively, what do I get? And yeah, why go after the kamado people? And why compare it to the LBGE on size, when its obvious competitor on size is the XLBGE? They make the argument that it is a legacy item, but the BGE people make the same claim.
I don't know the answers to these questions. I see a lot of the same objections that we gave to the Weber Summit. Time will tell. Honestly, if I didn't have the Weber Kettle, I could consider this. Big ol' 18"x20" or so heavy duty cast aluminum rear hinged hunka grillin' fury? Not just yeah but hell yeah!
Weber Summit Kamado with SnS and Vortex.. Broil King Baron, Primo Oval Junior. Primo XL. Love grilling steaks, ribs, and chicken. Need to master smoked salmon. Absolutely love anything to do with baking bread. Favorite cool weather beer: Sam Adams Octoberfest Favorite warm weather beer: Yuengling Traditional Lager. All-time favorite drink: Single Malt Scotch
I have never quite understood the PK thing, but hey, whatever floats your boat. I look forward to seeing some cooking vids of them in action. Thanks for posting, Dave.
By the way, Anybody else think that grill is one thermometer away from looking like a pig on a spike? No? Just me? ok. ;-)
Ever heard of Duchess Grills? I think that's PK before PK. Friend of mine is cooking on a Duchess this weekend (there's a pork chop contest on Friday night). I'll take photos.
