Please forgive the story below. It is likely going to be longer and more detailed than anyone should have to endure. I am just stuck at work when both my wife and my new grill are at home. The "tldr" version, as the kids might call it, is that my wife got me a new grill, and it is sitting in my garage until I have the chance to cure and season it...
So a couple months ago, my wife told me she ordered me a grill for my birthday (my birthday is in September, but as it turns out she said she ordered it in early August or late July). That said, she wouldn't tell me which grill she ordered, but instead wanted me to guess. I refused to fall for the trap, as any guess I made that was NOT the grill she ordered would have just made her feel bad that she had picked the wrong grill.
Fast forward a month, and she told me she received a fabrication email, and then a few weeks later got a call saying the grill was ready to ship. While she still refused to tell me what grill she order, these tidbits gave me a pretty strong indication that we were going to be getting something from the "Lone Star" state. Still, I did not want to get my hopes up.
Over the weekend, she told me the grill was scheduled to be delivered today - a day she does not have clinic, but I typically work late. Something came up at her parents' house that she had to deal with this morning, so she asked me if I could stay home in case the delivery showed up before she could get back (the delivery service gave a 9:00am-2:00pm window for delivery). I emailed my staff to let them know I would be working from home until possibly mid-afternoon. From there, my wait anxiously began.
At 11:50am, my doorbell rang and I was greeted by the delivery driver. He said he had a new smoker, and gave my wife's name. He also said he was instructed to simply deliver curbside. I asked if he could pull the truck up my driveway so we could get it into my garage, he said he would give it a shot, but he was a "small guy, and this thing weighs 700lbs." He was also concerned about the remaining snow in my driveway, and thought it might get stuck at the top of my driveway. I told him I was happy to help pull anything if it meant I would possibly get the grill undercover before I had to go back to work.
With that, the delivery driver deftly navigated his truck up my admittedly steep driveway, then finessed the grill onto the lift gate - it barely fit, but he managed to get it down. From there, he tried to pull it to no avail. At that point, fueled by adrenaline and excitement, I started to pull it across my driveway through the snow myself. Realizing his efforts were better served elsewhere, the driver decided to get behind the grill and try to push.
Within a couple minutes, we had it in the garage, and I just needed to situate it so that my wife could still park her car in when she got home. With that, I said farewell to the driver and just basked in the glow of my new beast - the LSG 24"X48" Adjustable Charcoal Grill and Smoker!
While I will probably not be able to get to a cook this weekend (since I work in college athletics, I have some work on Saturday - and my god kids want to get together on Sunday), I hope to have my inaugural cook next weekend. That said, I wanted to share this with someone - and outside of my wife, I'm not sure anyone I know would appreciate this as much as the people I have gotten to know on this board.
The moral of the story is, if you are with the right person, they do indeed listen - even if my wife bought this just to get me to stop researching and talking about different grills/smokers!!
