It LOOKS impressive, but I am not seeing any improvement in the look of the probes. That’s where Maverick’s weak point is, IMO. I like the Smoke probes much better. I have lost count of the number of Maverick probes I have replaced. Replaced ONE Smoke Probe.
My next thermometer purchase will likely be the Fireboard.
Hi, my name is Darrell. I'm an OTR truck driver for over 25 years. During my off time I love doing backyard cooks. I have a 48" Lang Deluxe smoker, Rec-Tec pellet smoker,1 Weber Genesis 330, 1 Weber Performer (blue), 2 Weber kettles (1 black and 1 Copper), 1 26" Weber kettle, a WSM, 8 Maverick Redi Chek thermometers, a PartyQ, 2 SnS, Grill Grates, Cast Iron grates, 1 ThermoPop (orange) and 2 ThermoPens (pink and orange) and planning on adding more cooking accessories. Now I have an Anova sous vide, the Dragon blower and 2 Chef alarms from Thermoworks.
Smoke has been a workhorse with no issues. Will be interesting to see how this one holds up, or how long it takes to see a four channel smoke hit the market. I do like the advertised range.
Smoke (ThermoWorks) will be hard pressed (impossible actually) to make a 4 channel Smoke with the conveniences and price point of this. They're a good solid device, but overbuilt and overpriced in my personal opinion. I too am interested to see the long term dependability of this unit..but think of all you're getting for $20 more than their ET 732...
I agree with Huskee regarding the Smoke. I own one and added the Gateway just so I could get a reading throughout my house (too many dead spots). With only two channels and that price...I think Maverick just hit them where it hurts, even if it does look like a Gameboy.
Are all probes swappable? In other words can I use my iGrill 2 probes on this and vice versa? I was thinking about getting a FireBoard but for the price this has my attention.
No, each device has their own probes. Unlike lightbulbs, probes are typically specific to one maker. In this case, these are unique even to Maverick, they aren't compatible with Mavericks older devices like the ET 732 and vice versa. However, Mav will replace defective probes in the warranty period on this new device, after that, they're $12 each.
You know, I have a 4 channel wifi/BT thermometer that does a nice job, but this would definitely fill a niche in my lineup of BBQ "stuff." My current leave-in thermometer needs an electrical outlet to work. And the unit itself is somewhat water resistant, but doesn't claim to be waterproof, although the probes are. I could count on one hand the times I have actually used the graphing feature. Hmmm...
Sorry for the long delay in responding. I better understand your use case. Don’t forget one thing you can do if you’re at a competition and want to roam a little bit is you can get an iPad with cellular (I’m sure Android has something similar if you’re on that platform) and turn it in to a host spot. A little pricey if that’s all you’re using it for, but may be worth it depending on your situation
More probes is nice but my next thermometer will have a way to record and examine the data -- but that's cuz I have a cooker that's famously unresponsive to adjustment.
Yup. Temp probes tell you what's happening. Being able to analyze the data would help you figure out how to change what's happening. The Smoke (both transmitter and receiver) know what the temp is; they just need a way to record and download to a computer.
Yeah, I do sort of want a Fireboard -- but not for the wifi, or the cloud storage. I just want the ability to record and download the data. A tiny amount of memory and a usb port is all I need.
I hate it when you guys do this! You all have convinced me I need so many things it's I can't even list them all. But as Huskee said at the start; some us don't like, want or need bluetooth or wifi. Don't care about charts and graphs - just want to know what the temp is if I go to the other side of the house. I love my Smoke but it will drop out occasionally if I go to the kitchen (beeping drives my wife nuts) and since the remote does not have a kick stand it's hard to place where I can just glance at it.
Never thought I would go back to Maverick, but I have to have this - Huskee's fault, and I'm telling my wife that!

Dan, I love how you always put things into perspective for us! What would we do without you!!!! And I always love your take on things no matter what they are.
Exactly. For those of us stone age folk that don't cook unless we're home to run the cookers, and don't want to stop mid-cook if the power goes out, these devices are still very relevant.
I don’t always use my fancy pants Wi-Fi thingie. But I am going to put together a battery backup for it. I will lose Wi-Fi connectivity in a power outage, but the thing will keep working.
