    ThermoWorks RFX HAS SHIPPED!!!!

Soooooo…. Given my unforgivable absence from the Pit, I likely missed great conversation and discussion about the new RFX.

I preordered the Gateway Kit (gateway, ambient probe, and 1 RFX probe) back in July. Super excited! As I had plenty of time to sit, reflect, and stew on my poor decision to only order the single probe as it supports something like 50. Well, the regret built and I “pre-ordered” a second probe in September sometime.

anyway, all that said, I am incredibly excited to report that I just receive my confirmation email that my single probe starter kit has shipped!!!!! I’m sure it will be some time for the second probe to ship, but hey, I’m really excited about the first bit showing up!!!

I’m off my game a bit in the outdoor cooking world lately, but I promise to report back my experiences when I DO get going with it!!!!

I held off on the Combustion Inc one and rightly so, Thermoworks has entered the fray. I am watching and calculating cost, performance, etc. Still undecided, although I do know I am fed up with wired probes.

Same. I was given the Weber Connect for free and I must say I do love it. Just hate that it’s wires.

I'm curious what your reviews are. I have the TempSpike and I'm pretty much ready to throw it in the garbage.

I have to keep my phone pretty much right next to my window in order to connect to the app. If I go more than a few feet away from the window (e.g., inside my house and maybe 10-15 feet from the grill/smokers), the thermometer disconnects and I'm greeted by an alarm so loud you would wake someone up from the dead.

Makes it practically useless, so I find myself defaulting to wired probes more often. Would like to get something better but don't want to be down another $100+ just take up space in my drawer

I also seldom use my Tempspikes anymore. I have had 4, only 2 still work. They're... ok. Not great, not turrible.

My Temp spike is in the garbage...Done!

Will see how things go with the new RFX. Hopefully a positive experience!

Alan Brice , I was thinking either of those, but now I think I might do a couple of chuck roasts to turn into burnt ends and run the RFX in one, and then my TempSpike and Maverick XR 50 in the other to try and do some comparisons. I suppose if I do a big clod I could do the same thing, just put them all in the same piece of meat…….

I have to confess that I'm a little jealous. I'm still waiting for shipping confirmation. I bought mine on August 5th.

I ordered the starter kit July 22, so my guess is that you’ll see yours ship in a week or so! No idea how many pre-orders they got, but sounds like you must be getting close!

Bought mine September 6th - I'll get them in time for maybe the Super Bowl! Got my Fireboard Pulses though!

I did a briskie last night. The Meater+ was disappointing. I think I got my $79 out of it.
Ordered a four pack RFX today. No idea when it will arrive. Here we go!! Following this post.

The one confusing thing about the RFX is the claimed distance of connecting the probes to the gateway. The confusion is that the RFX uses a separate, WIRED ambient probe that plugs into the gateway. So, guess where the gateway has to go - next to the cooker. Distance to the probes is negligible. And if you want to monitor the ambient temp in multiple cookers, I do not see how that works.

whether the external ambient temp measurements of the FireBoard Pulse, or Combustion Inc’s probes, are accurate remains to be seen. So, using the Pulse might mitigate this issue, where the FB2 does not need to be next to the cooker(s).

You can’t do that because the sensor end of their probes are to be put in food. - max temp of 212* of that end. So, the potato option works as long as it stays below the max sensor rating.

I would hope Thermoworks will release a wireless ambient temperature probe in the future. From their web site (https://www.thermoworks.com/rfx/):

"We’ve future-proofed RFX. Both RFX MEAT and RFX GATEWAY are the first in a series of innovative products built on our patent-pending industrial radio frequency network. Watch for new probes, sensors, and gateways coming soon"

I also think the wired air probe is there for the Billows fan support...

ID:	1660002 ARRIVAL AND UN-BOXING!!!!!

pictures are of course out of order because I still can’t figure out how to properly upload them in order from my phone. Lol!

of course, the obligatory Jelly Beans from ThermoWorks! As the shipping was delayed because of some last minute testing/certification requirements or something, ThermoWorks threw in a free case for pre-orders. Thanks ThermoWorks!!! Inside the box is the probe, gateway, ambient probe, and two bags of colored silicone rings to help identify multiple probes.

Should (hopefully!) do my inaugural cook tomorrow!!! Going to cook up a couple of chucks for burnt ends, then do a brisket next week to feed the teachers at the school where my wife works.

            More to follow!!!

Mine were hand delivered by my mailman last night.
All set up and ready to go.
The free case, for having being delayed, was a nice touch.

Can’t wait to hear about your experiences with it! I don’t feel like my experiences/opinions will be the best gauge for most folks since I’ve never had or used anything this fancy with graphs and charts and everything. Plus, I’m no pro! But hopefully a fellow newbie to the fancy thermometer world will get something out of this! 🤣

ID:	1660282 And we are off! RFX Meat in one of the chucks, my Maverick XR in the other just for comparison.

set up was pretty smooth in the app. The only issue I had was that the “next” button to add the gateway device was underneath another graphic at the bottom of the screen on my phone. I have an iPhone 12 mini, so that does happen on some apps/websites. It took me several minutes to finally tap just the right sliver of screen to move to the next step, but everything was good to go when connecting the meat probe on Click image for larger version

ID:	1660280 . Minor annoyance, but no big deal. As I have the ambient probe hooked up and in the smoker currently, I likely will not test the range until later. Will advise my experiences when I do.
