I am ready to pull the trigger on a Summit Charcoal. I already have a Performer, a WSM 18 and 22. I even have the Weber fire pit, which I have never seen another one. This seems like a way to streamline. I cook a lot. I do about 6-8 catering gigs per season. The reviews are stellar, but I am looking for cons (other than price). Let me know what you think.

I know you mentioned other than price......There are so many other choices at that price point. Yoder YS640, MAK STAR 2, Yoder Wichita, Good One Open Range the list goes on. And they all give you a ton of capacity. From the stand point of "What else could I get for that price", the other options are no brainers. I just don't see how the purchase of the Summit will stream line your cooking.Last edited by Spinaker; May 25, 2016, 09:05 AM.

Hi, my name is Darrell. I'm an OTR truck driver for over 25 years. During my off time I love doing backyard cooks. I have a 48" Lang Deluxe smoker, Rec-Tec pellet smoker,1 Weber Genesis 330, 1 Weber Performer (blue), 2 Weber kettles (1 black and 1 Copper), 1 26" Weber kettle, a WSM, 8 Maverick Redi Chek thermometers, a PartyQ, 2 SnS, Grill Grates, Cast Iron grates, 1 ThermoPop (orange) and 2 ThermoPens (pink and orange) and planning on adding more cooking accessories. Now I have an Anova sous vide, the Dragon blower and 2 Chef alarms from Thermoworks.

Weber Summit Kamado with SnS and Vortex.. Broil King Baron, Primo Oval Junior. Primo XL. Love grilling steaks, ribs, and chicken. Need to master smoked salmon. Absolutely love anything to do with baking bread. Favorite cool weather beer: Sam Adams Octoberfest Favorite warm weather beer: Yuengling Traditional Lager. All-time favorite drink: Single Malt Scotch
Why would you want to be talked out of it? 😃😃 If you want it and it's in your budget, go for it! You could always ditch one of the WSMs.

Weber Silver Genesis B, Weber Smoky Mountain, Cookshack Somekett Elite, Weber Performer Platinum, DigiQ II
I own a WSCG, and the one down side I can see for you is If you do catering, you probably need more cooking real estate than the WSCG offers. As Spinnaker stated you have many other options that can provide you with that real estate in the same price range.
Another downside is you will need to come up the learning curve, as this beast doesn't behave like either the kettle/performer or the WSM.
On the positive side, it will stream line your cooking, as it offers more temperature control and stability than the WSM, and it can reach higher grilling temps than your kettle/performer.Last edited by wbzipf; May 24, 2016, 04:06 PM.

I bought mine, sold the Performer and the WSM 18 is under a tree looking for a new home. I haven't missed either. I smoked a butt and 2 racks of ribs Sunday with the ribs on the extender thingie(sort of like a HoverGrill) and could have done another 3 butts at least if I was just putting the butts on the grill instead of in a pan.
I guess I'm not being much help in talking you out of anything, sorry....

Paulie - If I were going to spend that kind of cash, I'd get a Kamado Joe. There are many more accessories at this point for the KJ. Both will get you to the same point, but I feel at this point, the Kamado Joe is a better deal. Further, the warranty on the Kamado Joe can't be beat. The KJ gives you a bigger bang for the buck.

Beefchop - you'll also want the Divide and Conquer (D & C) system. That system is worth its weight in gold. I swear those Costco Road Show bargain just can't beat.
-
CeramicChef, Beefchop - the Divide & Conquer system comes standard with the Kamado Joe Classic and Big Joe. Agree about its value, and it is included. There are other accessories you can add, of course, but it really is ready to cook out of the box.
-
Pequod - thanks for clearing that up for us. Appreciate the help.

The Summit Charcoal gives you a Kamado and a Weber kettle in one appliance. Consider that. I have one and got rid of my Broil King Keg (A great machine that does one thing but does it well). My son got it, and he loves it, and Broil King makes a great Kamado.
But if you are "space challenged" on your deck as I am, having "one grill to rule them all" had some appeal for me.
Still have a Weber Summit gas grill from 2005 that i use occasionally, but the Summit Charcoal does the heavy lifting now.

billg71 - I see your ability to discern the obvious is still unimpaired!
-
Guest, I'm just thankful I have anything left that's unimpaired at almost 63! As an instructor in ET A school said repeatedly to our class 44 years ago: "Obvious to the most oblivious observer". I don't remember his name but I remember the statement.

Cooking gadgets
Weber Summit Charcoal Grill Center
Weber Summit Platinum D6
Blue Rhino Razor
Dyna-Glo XL Premium Dual Chamber
Camp Chef Somerset IV along with their Artisan Pizza Oven 90
Anova WiFi
Thermometers
Thermapen Mk4 - ThermaQ High Temp Kit - ThermaQ Meathead Kit - ThermaQ WiFi - ThermoWorks IR-GUN-S - ThermoWorks Signals & Billows - ThermoPop -ThermoWorks ProNeedle - ThermoWorks TimeStick Trio x2 - and a Christopher Kimball timer - NO, I do not work for ThermoWorks...I just like their products.
Other useful bits...
KitchenAid 7-qt Pro Line stand mixer
A Black & Decker food processor that I can't seem to murder
A couple of immersion blenders, one a "consumer" model & the other a "high end" Italian thing. Yes, the Italian one is a bit better, but only marginally
Instant Pot Duo Evo Plus 8-qt + accessories like egg-bite & egg holders
All-Clad pots & pans, along with some cast iron...everything from 7" Skookie pans to 8.5qt Dutch ovens
Weber GBS griddle, pizza stone, and wok
Knives range from Mercer to F. Dick to "You spent how much for one knife? One knife?!" LOL
Talk you out of spending money on a new toy..? Yeah, sorry...not really in my nature. LOL
IF it's within the budget, I say go for it. You could always retire one of the WSMs...and quite possibly even the Performer. Unless you NEED that extra real estate for a catering gig obviously.

I don't think you can make a good decision in a coat and tie. Put on an apron and a ball cap so you can think straight! Just kidding... you'll make the right decision. Sip on a Knob Creek and toke on that Arturo Fuente and your inhibitions will disappear and you'll end up with a pride and joy. Just buy it!
