    Summit Kamado question

I’m sure this has been discussed, but who has installed a fan and port to that grill, also what about a probe port? It’s double walled, I kind of feel like this is a “can’t do very easily”. I certainly do not require a fan to cook, but I’ve become a “fan” of peaceful night of sleep, knowing it is there, The probe port is not as big of deal.

Unless it was changed on the WSCG to WSK makeover, there’s already a fan port with a pop out plug. No probe ports needed, the lid gasket has give for the wires.

I couldn’t see any mention or view of it in the description or photo’s.

      Thank you Andrrr

BBQGURU is showing that they are using the Weber adapter in their kits. I thought that a double wall would require their bulkhead adapter which works with 1/8" to 2 1/8" walls. I did their "Help Me Choose the Right GURU Control for My Cooker" and selected the Weber icon which had the Summit Charcoal grill as an option.

Might want to ask them for clarification.

I can see where there may be some confusion. The dome of the grill is truly double wall in that there is no direct access between the walls. The bottom half is double wall but the area from basically the bottom charcoal grate down is single wall, so when all the grates are out you can actually put your fingers between the walls. The fan hole is kind of tucked up under the inside wall which makes the BBQ Guru adapter a little difficult to install but it protects the port from any falling ash so its actually in a good spot, not that falling ash is an issue with the BBQ Guru adapter but I suppose it could be with other style fans. This also means the hole only goes through the outside wall so the fan adapter will fit just as it does on a standard kettle. Btw it’s located at roughly the 3 o’clock position as you’re looking at the grill.

I have tried a fan and found it to be superfluous. Once dialed in these cookers run straight and true for many hours. And as already mentioned, the thick gasket allows for probe wires. That turns out to be fairly convenient in that you can position the wires anywhere you want.

I run the probe wires thru the top vent, although you might need to buy an extension for each wire depending on how long yours are. I used to just run them out over the gasket, but noticed a consistent charcoal burn pattern toward the right side where the wires exited. Finally determined that this cooker is so sensitive to the tiniest exhaust vent changes that even that little gap from the wires was affecting things. Since I started running the wires out the top vent all has been fine.

Jessterr Do you have the ignition system on yours? If so I believe that’s a big culprit too as it is basically an unregulated inlet that you’ll need to compensate for somehow. I think everyone experiences the left to right burn pattern.

Andrrr Good point.Yes, mine does have the ignition system, but I haven’t had the left to right burn issue since I started running the probe wires through the top vent. To run at 250-275F the top vent setting is just barely open, maybe 1/8”, bottom vents the same. That’s after lighting it up using a Looft Lighter just to get a couple coals started in the center, to keep the temperatures from over shooting. Maybe it’s because I’m down at sea level, but wires out the top have worked for me.

I know I’ve touted the ease and simplicity of a Smobot here many times. No fan needed, it fits on the top vent and works like a charm. I checked their website and they have a spot called other cookers that will help you find out if they have one for your cooker. It is so much more stable than our oven. In a typical cook I’ll get no more than a 10 F swing for hours. It’s WiFi and comes with two good temp probes for the meat and has a grill grate temp probe as well. I run mine through my IPad and phone. It will graph all the temps it is monitoring. I have one on each of my kamados and will never go back to anything with a fan.

The Smobot for the Weber Summit is slated for release later this year, according to the website.

WSK holds temperatures so well that I don’t need a fan.

If you do get a fan, you might want to stuff aluminum foil into the intake vents to block airflow. My blades are slightly lifted making it difficult to keep temperatures down.

My Summit maintains a temperature under most conditions without a fan. Having said that, I do use a BBQ Guru setup when making beef jerky.

As Glitch mentions, the Weber Summit Charcoal has a pop out plug on the bottom bowl, on the right side as you face grill. I use a Thermoworks Billows setup for long cooks and arrange charcoal via snake method. Check out Thermoworks Billows on YouTube. Just my 2 cents.

I’ve not used it yet, but one of these days I’ll get around to installing it.

I will check it out, I should be able to put an adapter on it for pit viper, as well.
