Added 1 tsp Vanilla. It was Fantastic! Ate a bunch before I got a pic!
Added a $6 fish tank bubble maker to try to keep the temps more stable. Seemed to work.
(note the high tech metering device on the tube.)
Worked pretty good.
I am enjoying this A LOT! The crock pots get cramped, particularly for this cook, so I think I am going to get a bucket heater and use a cooler or big poly tub next. I will keep you posted!

More Creme Brulee for my Mother in law's birthday. Had to use an old "roaster" to get enough room. Set the dial at 300 on the roaster and was able to hold 176 easily with the controller.
I tied the temp sensor to a fork to hold it in the middle of the roaster. (The sensor was 1.5" from the fork, so there was nominal heat transfer.
I needed more than my 4 jars could hold so I used baby food jars and a bag for the extra.
The baby food jars leaked, giving a less than stellar but edible product. The bag put out lumpy nastyness.
I poked a string of holes in my bubble making holes. Temp did stay steady in all areas of the water.
Dr ROK, be carful going from the Sous Vide to the ice bath. I had one break on me this last time from thermal shock. Let the jars temper on the counter for a few minutes before chilling.
This step Tripled the price of my set up, but I can now work in almost any vessel. At this point I probably should have just bit the bullet and got an Anova, but I am having fun building and changing this thing.
A replacement heating element meant for a water heater set up to convert the propane water heater in your RV to electric.
110V 650 Watt. Well within the parameters of my $15 controller. It is intended to go into the water heater through the drain plug, bushed down to a 3/8" compression fitting. If it is designed to heat 10 gallons of water for a shower... it should be able to get 4 gallons to 175 right? I was initially going to run it through the side of the cooler through some PVC fittings, but that would make the cooler a 1 trick pony. So I built this instead:
1/2" PVC fittings, PVC to compression conversion fittings, and some floor tile.
In the cooler:
Loaded with Creme Brulee:
This set up worked great! It took the water to 140 within 20 mins or so. Took another 30 to get to 175. Surprisingly equal temps across the cooler.
Total costs now: $75
Controller $16
Air Pump $6
Tubing $3
Heating Element $24
Plug $2
Fittings $14
Cooler $10
