I finally won the Chili cook off at my work. I've been trying for years. This year, I used Malcom Reed's Smoked Chili Recipe. I pretty much stuck to his recipe, with the only changes being I made my own spicy sausage using A.C. Legg Hot Pork Sausage Seasoning, and I substituted New mexico hot chili powder for the cayenne. Also, I used prime chuck since our local Cartwright's had it on sale. I think the win was for the execution of his recipe; I did it over a couple of weeks step by step using the freezer in between.
There were 8 contestants and about 30 judges. I got 16 votes, second was 10 votes, third 4 votes... so, a pretty clear win. The second place also used smoked meat and it was really good.
