This is more like it. We got your cukes, ‘maters, leaf and romaine, giant scallions (dae-pa), sweet Italian peppers, corn, and white peaches. And hiding right outside the frame is a jar of salsa.
Notes:
We’ve had good weather, and the melons here in PA are sweeter than the Texas melons. Texas melons are usually pretty good, but not this year.
Same with Pennsylvania peaches and (gasp) Georgia this year. We’ve been as lucky in the Northeast as the rest of the US has been unlucky. I’ll take it, it’s often the other way around.
The tomatoes are Ramapos; Jersey tomatoes. They don’t know there’s a border. If you’ve never had Jersey tomatoes, you’re missing something. They are beautifully red, and even colored and firm, and also have a wonderful balance of sweetness and acidity. They’re a great all purpose tomato, at home on burgers, on sandwiches, in salads, and because they are meaty you can even make sauce from them!
The giant scallions are incredible. They are onions, and taste like onions, but they’re mild enough that you can just pick one up and eat it. They’re like the Vidalias of green onions. This will last me two or three weeks, probably.
The corn was picked this morning around 7AM. The sooner you eat it the better; less than 12 hours, I’ll take that.
Lettuce isn’t supposed to do anything except be green, but this leaf lettuce is excellent. I got the romaine just because the other one is so good.
The peppers, I haven’t tried yet. I’m going to pickle them. I’m not sure if I’m going sweet or sour with them.
I think cucumbers are like corn. If they’re still warm from the field, they have a wonderful grassy taste that is delicious with a little dill, salt, oil, and vinegar.
As you can see, I’m far more psyched about this than I was with the Pittston Tomato Festival.
