    Scottish Salmon Have No Taste?

We normally grill Atlantic salmon but tried Scottish salmon recently and were very disappointed in its blandness. Bad luck or is Scottish salmon really, really mild? Are different breeds known for flavor differences?

I really like the mild flavor of the Wild Isle Scottish salmon. Most others are too fishy tasting for me. The only one I ever heard voice these concerns about it was my son's Indonesian girl friend. Your local fish monger can advise you in this regard.

I have a feeling it's going to vary by source. When we lived in MA, the fish store behind us had some farmed Scottish salmon, and we decided to try it out. Both my wife and I were impressed. It had a more robust flavor than any of the usual US farmed Atlantic. Right up there with wild Pacific.

        Hi (from Scotland!)

I suspect it was farmed scottish salmon, this definitely has a milder flavour. It is a fattier fish (due to diet) which means it can take more cooking without drying out, so you can "add" flavour. Wild salmon definitely has a stronger flavour, but conversely you need to take care when cooking.

I think you must have just gotten a bad batch.

Scottish, Sweden, Switzerland, Dutch, Danish; all on my "to learn list."

The salmon I get is from South America, forget the country.... Brazil maybe. I like it but am no connaisure.

Not sure if you live near an HEB Jerod Broussard but they have been selling Norwegian (they call it European) farmed salmon. I buy Copper River King from Alaska during their run and can say without hesitation that the Norwegian is nearly as good at half the price !!

Troutman we had an HEB, it closed about 10 years ago. Nearest is about 30 minutes. I pick up the walmart stuff when it gets slapped with the discount yellow tag.

Great perspective everyone; thanks! We'll give it another go. Like any other food, might have been the luck of the draw!

Go to Southeast Alaska in late August or early September and catch your own. Only way to fly!!!
