Salmon Sell By Date

Hi friends. I bought some salmon from Costco with a sell by date of December 3rd. My wife lives and dies by these things. Today being 3 days past the sell by date is it ok to freeze and keep for later or should I toss it? Appearance wise it looked fine and it smelled like….. 🐟. Thanks.

Sell by Dates are actually for retailers, not consumers. It's a matter of peak freshness, not when it might be unsafe.

The sniff test is always the best for fish. Salmon, tuna, and other very fatty fish are robust, but in my experience, when they start to lose freshness, they loose freshness fast.

I generally don't mess around with fish, but rinse it off before smelling it. Straight out of the packaging can have some extra fishy strength.
