    Refreezing shrimp - food safety question

    I bought shrimp at my local Asian International market. They put shrimp in what I think is a refrigerated display case. The shrimp is frozen when they get it and I'm assuming it thaws in the display case because its thawed when I buy it.

    I bought two pounds and Im refreezing a pound for future cooks. Is that food safe ?

    I Googled this issue and the results are very confusing.

    If they were safe when you got them, then sure. Go ahead a freeze them. I do it all the time.

      Yep, as long as it’s been cold the whole time, you’re good.

    Do it all the time, no problem. We always thaw the raw shrimp, cook then freeze again for our camping trips. I always, from frozen, thaw them in the frig, never the counter. They will thaw overnight.

      no problem! One suggestion: Next time ask them for the frozen shrimp they receive, thaw just the ones you want to eat, the rest stay in the freezer. I buy 3-5 lbs at a time frozen from Joe Patti’s like that. I once knew a guy whose family owned a shrimp 🦐 processing plant, he said shrimp can be thawed and refrozen many times without greatly affecting quality.
