Is my Savoie's Instant Roux & Gravy Thickener still good?

It's never been opened, still sealed, but says best by 9/7/19. What say you? Still useable? Toss it? On that note, has anyone ever used this before, and if so did you like it?

My sister would say it is still good. Me I would not use it.

It is not dangerous as in being a food poisoning risk but the flavor may have diminished over time. Taste it and see.

I don't know what it should taste like though. [shrug]

Honestly, roux tastes like browned flour. The ingredients are toasted white wheat and wheat flours with some spices. It is intended to be a base to build on - whether a gumbo, gravy, or other dish requiring a roux or thickening. I would use it and add seasoning as needed rather than waste it.

i's perfectly safe but unless you're going to start using it, I'd toss it just to free up the space.

Huskee - Cajun roux is just cooked longer so it browns. I mean, that takes time and this might be a shortcut but ... eh

I see, thank you. I thougth it meant it was spicy. It does list "spices" in the ingredients. Who knows. In any case it sounds like I'm not missing much if I toss it.

Huskee - they might have put some cajun seasoning in it. I mean... if you have a use for it (something gumbo like, etc), try it. But otherwise...

I’d toss it myself. Then I’d make my own roux. Homemade is much better.

But this is Cajun. Hence my wondering if anyone's tried this and if it's good.

I haven’t tried that before, but I have tried their fully made roux in a jar. It’s not powdered but actually a finished roux which you add to your water for gumbo, or whatever. It’s not as good as homemade, but convenient. Personally, if I had yours, I’d just use it as a gravy thickener and not to make a roux. They might be calling it Cajun because it has some spices in it? Not sure.

It says best by, which means it may not be best, just OK. I’s use it.

I'd toss it Huskee . Just had a look at what little info is available about its ingredients and other than a bunch of preservatives and a touch of gumbo filé, it doesn't look particularly special ... or Cajun ...
