    Onion Sauce

ONION SAUCE for steaks, or whatever else you want to use it on

    INGREDIENTS:
    2 TBLS sugar
    1 TBLS vinegar
    1 TBLS butter
    1 TBLS flour
    1 cup water
    salt (to taste)
    2 Med white onions, sliced

    melt butter in pan
add sugar and cook until the sugar JUST starts to brown
    Add and lightly brown onions
    add flour and stir
add water, vinegar and salt to taste
simmer until thick, serve on or next to steak

Ingredients may be varied to taste. I start with a bit more butter and tend to go a bit heavier on vinegar. ENJOY!

I had to look up this post, richinlbrg , after you mentioned it on the What would your last meal be? topic. This sauce sounds wonderful. I'm printing it out and will be making it with our next steaks. Thanks so much!

      Ohh, WOW!!

Hope y'all enjoy it as much as I do. Please let me know, and criticisms are welcome. Craigar , Danjohnston949 , Parnicus and fzxdoc , no pride of authorship here!

It should be a touch sweet and a touch sour, so adjust the vinegar and sugar to taste.

        Craigar , white distilled!

But you can try the balsamic and let us know!

richinlbrg Thank you! Before I start monkeying around I will stick with the original recipe and maybe give the balsamic a go later on down the road. Thanks again!

Thrilled you're going to try it, Craigar !

I pretty much always take your approach, sticking to the recipe verbatim, then try changes after that.

Thanks! I want to try this. I do something similar to sauté but you have added some nice wrinkles to make it a sauce. I appreciate it.

Craigar , I made it again last night, but when I went to the pantry to get the distilled white vinegar, we had none. I wont say who used the last (but the initials are #1, who, when asked said "ooppppsss LOL) so I tried apple cider vinegar. Didn't work well. Tried adding lemon and lime (a purported substitute). Not so good either.

So that change I do not recommend.

Also should note that the recipe calls for white onions, but I regularly use mayan or vidallia when in season. Not good with red onions.
