Dinner choice: BLT with cheese and roasted hatch, or grilled cheese with bacon, tomato, and hatch?

I took the kids to the airport this morning at 4:30AM, I’m tired, I don’t want to cook anything. And I still have to cut the grass, I’ve been putting that off all week. I thought I should make BLTs for dinner, then thought adding cheese would rock, then thought adding a nice butterflied roasted hatch would kill… then I thought it would be even BETTER toasted, like as a grilled cheese, but skipping the lettuce!

    1) I already have the bacon, I cooked up 1 1/2 lbs yesterday for bacon cheeseburgers.

    2) I know it doesn’t fit the definition of “grilled cheese” for some guy on Reddit. He can go… well, you know.

    3) The grilled cheese starts to get into actually cooking. But damn, that sandwich sounds really, really awesome. All the good stuff: good end of summer tomatoes, sharp cheddar, Wright bacon, roasted hatch. My secret ingredient: add a little garlic powder to the tomato. It’s not all that healthy, but I got a lot of credit built up there right now; just got an A+ on all my blood work (lipids, kidney function, A1C, etc). I’m not thinking of adding an ice cream sundae or anything.

    4) The BLT is classic, easy, quick, and delicious, and about 90% of the grilled cheese appeal with about 10% of the effort; it’s just assembly. No checking the pan or griddle for burning, no cleanup. Hell, I could add a fried egg to that sucker. That certainly wouldn’t kill it, now, would it? BLT with cheese, hatch, and a fried egg. Hmmm.

    What would you choose?

I vote both, after all it is dinner. Make it a multi-course meal.

I agree. Both is best. Just skip any sides for you feel better about both.

      One today, one tomorrow.

I voted BLT. We routinely have sliced cheese on ours, and very often avocado too (for a BLATCh). There is no better way to spend your late-summer tomatoes, full stop. Now, I admit my opinion is colored by the fact that this very day I realized that we are done with tomatoes for the year, and I am crushed. I am planning BLTs for our lunch tomorrow, and now will have to buy some tomatoes (or more properly, tomato-like objects, TLOs) for the first time in months. So I am extremely wistful today

You know what, I do have an avocado ready. That would work well. Might have to go double decker.

Man's gotta do what a man's gotta do! To be clear, I always make some guacamole out of the avocado because in my experience, slices of avo tend to make that one slippery sandwich. Spreading it on the bread makes it much more manageable.

Sorry to hear your tomato season is over. Always a bummer. Luckily just over 100 miles to your East it is still going here.

+1 on having both. Make 2 half sandwiches. One half of each type.

I’m thinking one today, the other tomorrow, when I feel more like cooking stuff.

I woulda voted both if that had been a choice.

Yeah, but I won’t be able to eat all that. Tomorrow exists for today’s second choice.

Yes a BLT please! That sounds so good and the egg sounds good too. The old Mexican cafes I used to frequent served an egg on top of their chili rellenos. Oh my they were so good!

Cornmeal deep fry a green mater! Try it with a whisper of dijon and some kosher dill slices.

my favorite "grilled cheese" is rye, with mayo on one slice, dijon on the other. Shredded extra sharp cheddar, Monterey jack, a few grinds of black pepper, kosher dill pickle slices, bacon, and pickled jalapenos. Skipp the butter for browning and use mayo as well.

Now here’s another choice. How about a “salad”, with lettuce and tomato, scallions, buffalo mozzarella and Parmesan OR goat's milk blue cheese, bacon, chopped hatch peppers, maybe an avocado/balsamic/mayo/garlic aioli, and a fried egg on top.

This way I can use both the brown and the yellow tomato I have. Idk, though, lots of competing flavors in that one. It might turn out to be less than the sum of its parts.

I’m suspecting you are the kind of person who goes into the paint store to choose between Antique white or Eggshell white and leaves the store with Sunflower yellow. You have two great choices already, don’t start second guessing now.🙂

Nice sandwich, and it gives me an idea. I never eat lettuce in a restaurant because of all the past recalls so my standard order is a bacon, mayonnaise, and tomato sandwich. Next time I’m at the diner I going to see if they can add guacamole. After all, I should eat my greens.

BLT - classic - with my homemade bacon. Triple decker, lots of bacon, on toast.
I cut off bread and sugar from my diet, mostly, so this is now a delicious luxury.

I use 21 grain and seed organic whole wheat bread; low glycemic index. No white bread, no sugar for me either.

Mosca - thanks for the tip. Nothing processed, or out of a box, or deep-fried frozen. Only real food, whole, that we make. It might seem like a sacrifice, but when the body and brain get healthier, the effect cannot be denied.
I’m not a total fanatic though. Yesterday I had a double bacon burger for lunch at a joint called Dead Bobs. Although it was the only meal of the day. 😬

I try to use common sense. I eat what I want to eat… it’s just that what I want to eat has changed. It doesn’t feel like a sacrifice at all. But if I want to eat the fresh bread at a restaurant, I eat it. If Mrs buys cookies, I’ll probably skip them… but if I feel like grabbing one, I’ll do it. I just don’t usually feel like it.
