    “Chopped Salad Sandwich”? WT…heck?

I read about this maybe 6 months ago, but dismissed it. For some reason I was thinking about it the other day, and even mentioned it to Mrs Mosca last night as we were on our way somewhere. And then this morning I was sitting in a waiting room watching GMA, and they brought it up as a “recipe”.

    [rant]

Sorry, this is bullshit. The idea is you take all the ingredients that you would use in your sandwich, chop them all up and mix them together, then stuff your roll or bread or bun with that. The idea is to get a little bit of everything in each bite.

Uh… isn’t that what your teeth and jaws are for?

I guess if you are down to gums this is a good idea. Or take it further: why not toss everything in the food processor or blender and liquefy it! Then you could spoon it into your mouth. Or, add water, and you could drink it from your Stanley Cup, using a metal straw!

I’ll just make a sandwich, thank you, and skip all the unnecessary TikTok crap. Kids today think up stuff and share it like they were the first ones to get an idea. But some of us don’t see the point in taking an extra 5 minutes, and messing up a cutting board and another knife, when we could be eating a sandwich… THE EXACT SAME SANDWICH, with our god-given teeth and jaws doing as god intended.

True story: my wife had a major surgery to her jaws way back when we had been married only about a year. It required that her jaws be wired shut for 8 weeks. Every meal she had for those 8 weeks was made in a blender and eaten through a straw. No kidding. No fun to say the least.

When I had my tonsils out I was missing pizza and tried blending it. It turns out that isn't the same as chewing because there is no saliva so you end up with a dry pasty concoction that you can't drink and don't want to chew.

You should try boiling your pizza.

When I was about 6yrs old, I took a header from the top of a jungle gym, and I took a bite out of a metal bar on the way to the ground, which is what I got for standing on top of a jungle gym according to family members.

Anyway, for 4 weeks I ate through a straw and it was another 4 weeks before I could really bite or chew, so don't be too harsh on the kids. They might not know it is a bad idea to stand on top of a jungle gym.

Same as above. As soon as your jaw was okay, you stopped.

It reminds me of phone makers eliminating the headphone jack then selling 3.5mm-to-USB adapters to connect headphones.

Kind of describes a Philly cheesesteak doesn’t it?

Nope. Philly cheesesteak is a hot sandwich. And it is thin sliced, shredded, griddled beef, not deli meat. If a Philly cheesesteak had started as a boneless ribeye sandwich, then we could talk.

Exactly. Also describes chicken salad, egg salad, tuna salad sandwiches, chopped cheese (for those in NY), etc

shify But you don’t chop the lettuce and tomatoes into those salads. And you put celery into chicken salad, but you wouldn’t put it on a sandwich.

            Different things.

Here is the GMA segment, which includes the original TikTok thing.

Chopped salad sandwiches first took over food TikTok last fall, but the recipe is great as ever. Here, check out Alexa Santos' version.

I don't like this idea for sandwiches necesarily. But I've seen a similar idea applied to other type of food categories and they ended up being quite delicious and kind of a fun way to present a favorite food in a different way. Examples:

            Reuben Sandwich Croquettes
            Hot Chicken Sandwich Egg rolls

Definitely not necessary to eat things this way, but a crowd pleaser when we have guests.

I agree and accept those, as fun, as appetizers, tailgate food, etc. The presentation serves a purpose: being bite sized and quick to eat. But I think we also agree, taking the exact same sandwich you were making anyhow and turning it into… the same sandwich, but chopped? Nah.

Agreed - unless your a masochist in which case you might want to endlessly turn your sandwich into the same sandwich lol

I agree. Honestly just more click bait. I for one love sandwiches and don't think anyone should mess with the concept....

Right? I mean, the Earl himself had this option and obviously chose a different route. Then for THREE HUNDRED YEARS people made MILLIONS of sandwiches, and never thought, “Gee, this would be better if I chopped it…” or, if they did, immediately said, “Ugh. no,” and never mentioned it again. And then, some kid decides to film it and TikTok it and claim it’s BETTER? Give me a break. Stupid Gen Whatevers.

Is it earth shattering? Not really, but I'd try it. It looks really good.

That said what grinds my gears is the flipping banners at the bottom of videos blocking the content.

I've got a great idea... why don't you cut the bread into cubes and put it on top of the chopped stuff! You could call them something French, like croutons. People would line up for this if you posted it online.

Lol I just told my wife about this. Her reply:

"This is the real reason why women should always make a man's sandwich. Men will just complicate it."

Oh, of course it is ok. But is it BETTER? Because it would have to be, to justify the extra steps!
