Cook for 20 minutes!? I assume these are not precooked. No microwave instructions?

The instructions are from their " PORTILLO'S ITALIAN BEEF KIT & HOT DOG KIT COMBO", and I’m assuming the dogs aren’t pre-cooked. I don’t see any instructions for waving them.

Ship Portillo's Italian Beef from Chicago online and ship Portillo's hot dogs online from Tastes of Chicago today!

The combo looks great, but I have a firm rule--not a penny over $150!

I see the benefits of the boil but I'm old school....toss em over the coals/flame.
....and nuking a dog is like boiling ribs....I just can't do it....
No problem with those that nuke, I just can't do it.

I have no problem with a long low simmer. I'll eat them any way cooked except blackened.

And I like them charred, so they have a bit of crunch when you bite into one.

The instructions for warming the buns go against my experience with our microwave. If you heat any kind of bread in our microwave for 2 1/2 minutes when it cools it won’t be bread at all but some substance that can’t be eaten. It will be hard and tough, impossible to eat.

I wondered if those instructions were written 25 years ago. It takes our wave about 30 seconds to warm up a piece of bread and melt the butter on it.

Our lava machine as my son calls it will do that in about half that time. When I warm up bacon for breakfast I can lay several pieces on a paper plate and have them sizzling in 20 seconds. We seldom use it at full power.

Portillos catering is expensive and we’ve only done it a few times and it was for their Italian beef sandwiches. I haven’t boiled a hotdog since my college days but am guilty of microwaving them for my kids when they were younger. Now I’ll do them over fire.

I wonder what temperature that would translate to for sous vide.

My water boils at 196 F, does that count??? The only dogs i boil are from a leftover bbq for lunch the next day.

I had a few of those when i was stranded in Chicago last year. Around the corner from my hotel. First time i walked right past the line out front. When my son said i shouldn't leave town without trying one, i stood in line. Went back the next three days (and stood in line, gladly).

Should someone point out the typo to Portillo's?

Also, I use a grease splash shield over the simmering water to steam the buns for a few minutes.

I like this steaming idea. I'm going to try that sometime.

I remember my Mom cooking Hot-Dogs in a "Dry" Crock Pot back in the 1970's; they were good

Awesome woman who raised 5 kids on her own,,,,never had time to be a great cook and as we got older we teased her about it all of the time.

Her Crock Pot Hot dogs and her Chip Dip (equal parts Sour Cream,& Cottage Cheese + Lipton Onion Soup Mix!!) are legendary in my Fam!

I'm not a hot dog guy, but I recall a chain that steamed their dogs in beer years ago— Lum's.
