    In need of a

Yard bird dealer. Lately it seems any chicken I buy has become sub par to what I am wanting. Not sure if this exists, but, seems like you all have a dealer for every other animal we try to honor a bit. Thank you in advance.

I’ve ordered some of the Pasture Bird stuff from Crowd Cow, but I don’t know if that is what you are wanting. Perhaps you have tried it already though. I don’t know if it was better than everything else I’ve tried. It was good, but It seemed pricey for chicken, which sounds funny coming from a guy that just spend a pretty penny on beef yesterday

I guess I can tell the difference on beef but haven’t noticed it on chicken.

http://Pasturebird.com Awesome 100% pasture raised chickens. Easily the best chickens I have ever had. Much better flavor than grocery store birds. Use code COMPLETECARNIVORE10 and you can save 10%.

Pretty reasonable prices. You can get 20 1/2 chickens for $179.99 or about $18 per bird. About $5 or $6 per pound. They ship free too which is always nice.

Try www.localharvest.org to find a producer near you. That way you know where and how it was raised.

Do you have a Whole Foods near you? I don’t really shop there, but the chicken I buy at my grocery store is sold by Whole Foods, at least on the west coast. The key to me is to look for air chilled chicken. If it’s air chilled, it tells me they take more pride in their product.

This! ^^ Call around and see if anyone carries air chilled chix. I can't remember seeing any liquid in the bottom of the tray when it's air cooled. And if you have ever seen what's in the water that is used to chill commodity chix, you would not want to eat it.

Richard, I would think there has to be a person in your area who grows chickens for sale at a Farmers Market, Food Coop, Local Meat Market/Butcher Shop or ?? Often times the price will be substantially higher but you'll be getting a "Home Grown" product. You are close to Amish Country. That might be another source for you.

I exclusively buy air chilled chicken from Central Market here in Houston. They don’t have all the moisture trapped in them like conventionally processed birds. That, I find, is almost as important as how they are raised. Unfortunately I don’t think they ship but could be wrong. My point is look at the processing as well. Sorry that’s not much help.

I buy these chickens from my local market. The last time I branched out there was a brown spot in one of the breasts. I threw the whole chicken in the garbage.

I do believe Costco brand chicken is air chilled...I'll confirm when I go into work.

Due to supply issues with COVID I can't say that the KS chicken is air cooled; it really just depends on availability.

We've been happy with Porter Road's chickens.

Do a web search in your local area and see if there are any poultry farmers around? Not the commercial farmers but rather someone that will sell you a couple once in awhile.
Also ask around at a local farm supply store.

Smart Chicken (above ) is good. Mary's (Whole Foods) is too. But if you want a cut above, I'd agree with others that you might want to find local farms that sell at farmer's markets in your area. For example, these people are great https://www.stokesberrysustainablefarm.com and sell at the University District Street Market... in Seattle. If you can find someone similar in your area, I think that would be the best choice.
