I know that beer can chicken is not a recommended way to cook chicken. But what about using a stand, like the Kamado Joe ceramic chicken stand, without any kind of liquid? I guess what I'm asking is, "Would cooking a chicken vertically in a ceramic cooker work better that cooking it sitting normally on the grate?"
Seems to me that if you can stand chickens up then you save space for more food on a grill with a limited size like an original Kamado Joe. Thinking out loud.

I agree with MBMorgan... They make a good stand... If space isn't going to be a factor for you then spatchcocking the chicken works great as a cooking method... I would also encourage you to take a look at or try loaf/bread pan chicken that Chris Lilly from Big Bob Gibson's recommends and it wouldn't take up much more space than the stand.
The only problem might be that it prevents airflow, with brings up Meathead's problem with beer can chicken. When you hang in a PBC, you get airflow through the cavity. When you stand on something wrireframe, like this, you're in the good zone:

But the KJCC, I think the airflow is a problem, like with a cannon or a beerbutt. But haven't had my hands on one, so couldn't say definitively.
If I could scale this for a turkey, I'd be all over it:

Whuuuut? This thing looks like an adaptation of a wine pourer for a chicken-shaped bottle. Just kidding.
But you know what? Take away that stand and make a couple of simple tweaks, and you've got a PBC turkey (and chicken) hanger:
No reason why that WS design shouldn't work on a gasser or smoker.
I used to use this WS chicken roaster on my gasser, in my pre-PBC days. Now I almost never cook chicken on my gasser. The two-in-one Vertical Chicken Roaster looks like a beer can chicken thing except the upright support is vented, sort of like the design that you show, Potkettleblack :
I thought so, but people say the breast skin doesn't get crispy (and apparently never heard of moving the thing to the hot part of the grill for five minutes).
I think I'm just gonna spring for a rotisserie next year.
