    Bad turkey?

I left a turkey in the garage fridge most of yesterday and all night last night. When I went to get it just now it had aired the bag it came in up like a balloon. I’ve never had that happen before. I don’t even want to open it if that means it’s bad. What do you think?

It doesn’t sound good, but knowing what to do is above my pay grade. I generally operate on the “if in doubt, throw it out principle.”

+1 on when in doubt, throw it out

Yeah, not a good sign. Could clear your sinuses though...

I haven’t punctured the bag. I just don’t want that smell this early.

    Any pics of it?

I’ll snap a few when I get ready to carry it out.

I would carefully return it for a new one.

Did the fridge get plugged in after the move?

Yes, yes it did! There’s a list of things I didn’t get right in the move, this isn’t one of them.

I’m headed to the back of the property to dispose of the bird in just a bit. The critters will have a good Thanksgiving too.

Sorry to hear about your bird. That sucks. I definitely miss living in the country when things like this happen. Heck, we could pretty much burn old tires and no one would bat an eye.

dpearce It is nice. We are truly rural. We live 2 miles down a private dirt road and that comes off a paved farm to market road. It’s unusual to hear a vehicle or plane here. Our nearest neighbor is over half a mile a way through hundreds of trees. On a still morning you can hear him talking to his dog.

Wonder what happened. Bad refrigeration in transport, there would be many more. Maybe was mishandled, out of refrigeration for quite a while. You made the right choice. I would at least let the store know about it. I had that with a whole chicken once right from the store. I went back with the receipt only, told them I didn't want to gross them out. They gave me a refund.

It could be yeast or something in the water it was washed in or even thaw and refreeze. After I ask the question here I realized I just wasn’t willing to chance it. It’s an hours drive back to where we bought it so I’ll just chunk it and write it off to stuff happens.

Oak Smoke Yeah one of those "it would cost more in gas...." situations.

Yeah - I don’t think meat is supposed to ‘ferment’. Carrion eaters, cats etc would not have an issue. I wouldn’t give it to my dog though, literally. 🤢

Looks like it went through the injection process 1 too many times. Or maybe 3-4 times too many. Or maybe it's self-reproducing????

Good choice. I had a beef roast do that this year and I tossed it without a second thought.
      Better safe than sorry...

Just remember to set it down gently, back slowly away in an upwind direction, then at about 25 yards open the turkey carefully with a 210 gr Silvertip. Then turn and run (upwind) ...

58limited I’m trying to decide between a screaming fast hollow point or a devastating big bore at a more modest velocity. I’d really like to use one of my Gatekeeper copper 12 gauge slugs. I only have 5 of them so I’m thinking it over. They open to the size of a half dollar but don’t fragment. They’re just the definition of lethal.

texastweeter So far I don’t have one at the new location. The nearest neighbor of any kind is a half mile away. The Corp of Engineers has a huge track of absolute jungle that adjoins our place on the east. I’m interested in what I could draw out of there.

I bought 2 turkeys when we were at the supermarket last time. I wanted a spare to cook for fajitas and such. It’s now been moved up to be the star of the show. If it should start to inflate also I’ll run to the store tomorrow morning for a replacement. If all else fails I have 2 large frozen chickens in the freezer.

Panhead John Yes I did ! Thank you. We have to do something. I go to the door now and there will be packages there, I never knew anyone drove up. In the city I’m sure that’s common, but here it’s negligent behavior. If someone drives up here I want to know. We absolutely aren’t on the way to anywhere. I don’t feel unsafe at all but I want to know when someone is here.
