How much trust should we put in our noses?

Picked up a managers special whole chicken yesterday to make today for the wife and me. She wasn’t home to confirm but I’m pretty sure it smelled funky. I’m still cooking it on the rotisserie to at least get some practice. What does my bbq homies do when something doesn’t smell right?

I would tend to toss it. Whether it is actually bad or not, a funky smell for a food that should not have a funky smell, is just not worth the risk to me. Plus, an odor that is "off", even if the food is good, leads to an un-tasty taste as we do eat with our eyes, nose and tongue. Just my opinion.

Toss it. Especially poultry. When in doubt, throw it out.

Poultry or pork, if it smells off, I take no chances. Toss

I had that happen, also with chicken, a couple months ago. The “sell by” date was about a week into the future, but each of three packages smelled to high heaven. I went back to the store (Wegman’s) and exchanged them no problem. But no way would I eat them.

I tossed a brisket once. Someone else picked up a couple cases from the store. I kept going back to try and trim it and gagged so hard I'm surprised I wasn't sore the next day.

          Better to toss.

Spoilage microbes per se don't cause sickness, but if they are growing than there is a good chance the good tasting ones that will put you in the hospital are growing too.

Thanks for all the input, gang. I needed your extra little nudge toward tossing it. It’s looking so pretty tho! 😢 you’re 100% right tho, safety first

You sure it wasn't cryo stink? Have ran into that with brisket, ribs and lamb before

I think it was the meat. If it weren’t for the “‘manager special” I’d be more open to other reasons. But there were 3 chickens with the same sell date that didn’t have a manager special. So I’m thinking something was up

Been down that road before, just toss it. Chicken shouldn't have any funky smell what so ever.

Never trust a smelly chicken. Ever.

If your nose tells you it’s off…the chicken must be tossed!

I tried dry aging a pork belly in cryovac. Typing this causes a nasty gag reflex.

Toss it, I sniff all my meat before it's cooked.
