It’s been years since I’ve deep fried a turkey so I’m no expert, but these guys have a great idea, using a 2 x 4 to slowly lower the turkey. Short video.

Alton Brown did something similar on Good Eats years ago, and I always thought it was a bit Rube Goldberg.....that is until I experienced my first oil explosion by putting frozen okra into a fryer.Originally posted by texastweeter View PostI use a ladder, a pully from my game gimbal, and a section of cable.
Such a device is absolutely warranted.....a large cold turkey into hot oil has the potential to basically becoming a bomb.

A former neighbor decided to do one for thanksgiving one year... He did it in his kitchen. I don't think he was ever able to get all the oil off this ceiling and had to replace the linoleum flooring.

They sell electric indoor turkey fryers. I had one for years I used for chicken, taters, fish, shrimp...neve had the cajones to try a turkey.

Unless you're cooking for all your friends and neighbors too, its hard to justify the oil cost for a single bird.
Leftover oil drained and filtered is ok for certain things, but still has that turkey rub / spice / taste and my wife wet brines in Indonesian spices and coconut milk (which is the bomb by the way!) so that really does in the oil.

Been doing fried turkey for years. There’s minimal risk if you’re following the basics. I was jittery at first but after years of doing it it’s pretty simple now.
The local fire department had tried to make a public service video of the dangers of frying a turkey and they had to modify what they did so much just so they could get the reaction like the above video.

All this talk of deep frying turkey (delicious, but not worth the hassle for me personally) but I rarely if ever read of anyone deep frying a whole chicken. Seems far easier and possibly more delicious. Anyone do this?

Sorry Panhead John If anyone should know not to hijack a topic it should be me. I hope you don't mind I changed gears here a little.

Huskee 😂 you didn’t hijack anything, fried chicken, fried turkey…same thing, ones just a little smaller. And honestly, when I post something, it doesn’t bother me if someone goes off topic, it’s usually more interesting than what I post anyway. 🥸 I like that deep fried chicken thing, I might try it myself one day.
-
Panhead John I'm glad it didn't bother you. I really should've started a new topic asking this to talk more about chicken. But occasionally I drink whiskey.

I spatchcocked for a few years then I started separating out all the pieces so I could smoke the breasts to 160 and the legs/thighs to 180ish and still get done around the same time.
Last 2 years I just did smoked turkey breast since our numbers have dwindled with adult children being all over the world and not able to come for thanksgiving.
