How To Correctly Deep Fry a Turkey…..

It’s been years since I’ve deep fried a turkey so I’m no expert, but these guys have a great idea, using a 2 x 4 to slowly lower the turkey. Short video.

Nice and easy now. Nice and easy so the kids and siding don't get melted.

Yeah. Biggest mistake most people make is too much oil in the pot or lowering it too fast. 😳

I bought one of the electric 10 liter ones. It works great without so much danger. As a bonus it will boil and steam also.

I love fried turkey except for what to do with the used cooled off oil.

Give it to the recycle people when they set-up a mobile collection in your area.

Alton Brown did something similar on Good Eats years ago, and I always thought it was a bit Rube Goldberg.....that is until I experienced my first oil explosion by putting frozen okra into a fryer.

Such a device is absolutely warranted.....a large cold turkey into hot oil has the potential to basically becoming a bomb.

Years ago at a car dealership I ran, we gave away a free fried turkey with every vehicle bought in November. One guy git drunk and nearly burned down the shop and finance office on that end of the building.

A former neighbor decided to do one for thanksgiving one year... He did it in his kitchen. I don't think he was ever able to get all the oil off this ceiling and had to replace the linoleum flooring.

They sell electric indoor turkey fryers. I had one for years I used for chicken, taters, fish, shrimp...neve had the cajones to try a turkey.

Unless you're cooking for all your friends and neighbors too, its hard to justify the oil cost for a single bird.
Leftover oil drained and filtered is ok for certain things, but still has that turkey rub / spice / taste and my wife wet brines in Indonesian spices and coconut milk (which is the bomb by the way!) so that really does in the oil.

Wings or fried chicken work ok in it afterwards. Family of 6 here, so I'm ALWAYS cooking for a crowd.

A church I used to serve fried chicken in the spring, fish in the fall. Then they dumped the grease down the hill into a ravine. Don't blame me, it wasn't my idea.

I take the turkey out of the package and rinse it. Put it in the pot i am going to use and fill the pot with water until it covers the bird to the extent i want it and notate level. Then when ready, fill oil to level, heat and slowly lower into pot.

Which Chinese take-out offers deep-fried turkey???

          #12
I have never made one, and have no plans to try it. I've had some made by others before, and it was good, for sure. But not so good that I'd be willing to risk some serious disaster... Avoid the avoidable, I always say when it comes to safety.

Turn off the gas as you SLOWLY lower the bird and do it in an open area away from structures and overhanging anything.
Once bird is fully submerged turn on the gas again.

Been doing fried turkey for years. There’s minimal risk if you’re following the basics. I was jittery at first but after years of doing it it’s pretty simple now.
The local fire department had tried to make a public service video of the dangers of frying a turkey and they had to modify what they did so much just so they could get the reaction like the above video.

All this talk of deep frying turkey (delicious, but not worth the hassle for me personally) but I rarely if ever read of anyone deep frying a whole chicken. Seems far easier and possibly more delicious. Anyone do this?

Huskee 😂 you didn’t hijack anything, fried chicken, fried turkey…same thing, ones just a little smaller. And honestly, when I post something, it doesn’t bother me if someone goes off topic, it’s usually more interesting than what I post anyway. 🥸 I like that deep fried chicken thing, I might try it myself one day.

Panhead John I'm glad it didn't bother you. I really should've started a new topic asking this to talk more about chicken. But occasionally I drink whiskey.

I spatchcocked for a few years then I started separating out all the pieces so I could smoke the breasts to 160 and the legs/thighs to 180ish and still get done around the same time.
Last 2 years I just did smoked turkey breast since our numbers have dwindled with adult children being all over the world and not able to come for thanksgiving.
