When "Boneless Chicken Wings" aren't "Boneless Chicken Wings"

A suit has been filed against Buffalo Wild Wings for serving/advertising "boneless chicken wings" that are not made of wing meat at all.

The plaintiff says they would have made another choice had they known they were white meat (albeit white meat prepared in the same style as traditional wings would be). The argument is that boneless wings, made of a cheaper meat, should not cost as much as they do in comparison to real wings.

Buffalo Wild Wings is credited for inventing boneless wings.

On their menu, it says they are "all white meat chicken". Just wait until he sees "cauliflower wings" on the menu as well, and wonders whether vegetables could fly.

As Bill Handle (on Handle on the Law radio program) would say, "it says white meat on the menu? you have no case, sir. Next caller."

Yeah I saw this in my inbox this morning, and read in the article that the lawsuit says they are just "glorified chicken nuggets". Well, duh!?!? Are you saying someone didn't realize that boneless wings (and they are on other menus such as Zaxby's I think) are just chicken nuggets tossed in sauce?

I think this case will get "tossed"... or "hand spun" maybe.

Old Glory I end up eating at a lot of pubs and bars but I guess around here our menus tend to be a little more interesting with some really tasty stuff that's more than run of the mill pub fair. It's a food city and that filters all the way down to the food carts.

A couple of years ago I read opinion piece that argued that boneless wings should really be called “saucy nuggets.” I still chuckle thinking about it.

I actually really like these and have them at Chili's a lot. (They are better, if you can believe it, than their bone-in wings.) As of September, the price increased from $6 for seven of them to $11 for seven, so I haven't gotten them as much as I used to.

I also order them with the restaurant parlance of "BB wings."

(I will warn you....never look at the nutritional information for these at any restaurant. You simply do not want to know how much salt they have.)

most places with trash bone in wings still have decent if not surprisingly great boneless ones... but I prefer my wings unbreaded so rarely go with "boneless wings"

I always say there is no such thing as a boneless wing. Hence, I never order them.

Give them a shot. They are fried chicken tenders with sauce. Very tasty. It's not like it is processed mystery meat.

    #5
They're also not buffalo wings. Is anyone suing them over that? Petty nonsense.

If Buffalo did have wings, they’d probably have enough meat that you could serve boneless wings. Maybe that’s why the plaintiff was confused.😂😂

"Boneless Wings" are at almost every restaurant around here that serves wings. They have been for years. When you order wings the waitress asks boneless or bone in. They are not true de-boned wings they are breaded fried tenders tossed in sauce. They are not processed nuggets. Everyone around here knows that and is ok with it.

They are different but just as good. If you don't want to get your fingers dirty you can eat them with a knife and fork.

I usually don't get them, but if I was out on a business lunch and didn't want sauce on my shirt, I would probably go with the boneless for sure, as they don't make the mess.

I thought it was common basic knowledge just like calling a beef burger a "ham"burger, which is why I think this is a petty attention grab.

One of the things promised when access to the internet became far, far easier was that folks would have more access to information, and that being able to be better informed they'd make better decisions. Sure.............that's shown to work soooooooooo well.

I find it hard to believe that any grown person would believe that boneless chicken wings are actually meat from chicken wings. Just my opinion though. I think my son asked what that meant when he was around 7.

I have little sympathy for corporations that continually push the envelope of what they can legally get away with in their advertising claims. Or, often, what they think they can get away with because no one will bother to make a federal (or state) case out of it. In this case, even if the plaintiff wins, I really don't see how he recovers any significant damages though.

As I said, I don't see this lawsuit going anywhere.

But there is an difference between "cauliflower wings" and "boneless wings." The word "cauliflower" puts the consumer on notice that something is being sold other than a chicken wing. Stating "boneless wings" doesn't lead one to suspect that what is being purchased is something other than, well, a wing. It's true that they included "white meat" in the description that followed (aka fine print), but how about a little candor up front?

Even if they didn't say "white meat", part of the suit suggests that there's a higher price charged vs regular wings.

The other argument would be -- even if it was Wing Meat, there's a higher cost because of the work involved to debone the wing (and shape it into a more palatable Nugget shape afterwards)

Do you think it is a surreptitious marketing ploy to dupe unwary diners?

It is the method and sauce not the part of the bird.

Can we agree that "Boneless Chicken Wings" are just chicken fingers that are over priced? Anyone, anyone........Bueller?

Agreed! Bdubs has half-priced boneless wings on I think Tuesdays. Make's 'em a great deal. Otherwsie no. Not that wings are ever healthy, but that's a lot of breading that I don' want.

I blame the advent of all of these frivolous type lawsuits on that stupid jury back in the 80s that awarded all that $$ to the dumbass that burned her hoohah by trying to hold a hot cup of McDonlald's coffee between her legs while driving.
Since then, any number of people feel due some form of big money compensation for something that really is just a result of their own stupidity in many cases....

    End rant...

The infamous hot coffee lawsuit held McDonald’s accountable—and turned the country against an innocent woman. Here's the real story.

“Basically, Stella told McDonald’s, ‘I want you to cover what Medicare doesn’t cover, and I want you to get a better lid on that coffee because I don’t want this to happen to another person.’ That was what she was asking for.”

      1) She was not driving, she was a passenger in a parked car. 2) The coffee was not just hot, it was dangerously hot enough to "causes third-degree burns (the skin is burned away down to the muscle/fatty-tissue layer) in 2-7 seconds". 3) she didn't just "burn her hoohah" she suffered 3rd degree burns on her groin 4) McDonalds had injured more than 700 other people similarly prior to the lawsuit, and the knew about it 5) The jury found her 20% responsible and McDs 80%.

Yeah the McDonald’s coffee at the time was like 190 degrees - insanely hot. They reduced the temp after the lawsuit but I believe ramped it up gradually in years since.

This is why there is no such thing as a true boneless wing in a bar.

And whenever the discussion about boneless wings not being real wings comes up I always think of this.

This is the very definition of a frivolous lawsuit. A better suit would be against Tyson for calling the lower calf portion of a chicken leg the drumstick. Ever tried to make music with a chicken drumstick?

Couple more: Sue Buffalo Wild Wings because their chicken wings don't come from wild chickens in Buffalo.

And make them prove that flying Buffaloes used their wings.
