For the past 5 years we have always purchased organic, fresh kill, fresh kill organic...... Basically the most expensive turkeys. Every year we were always disappointed with the bird, mostly far from tender. This year i said the heck with that, went to our local City Market and bought a frozen Kroger premium bird. We just finished our dinner and that was the best bird we have had in years. Perfectly tender and flavorful. I'm not sure if it was injected certainly didn't taste any injection, no salt taste whatsoever. Pleasantly surprised.

I learned my lesson with a heritage free range turkey one year. It turned out OK but was more lean and therefore more dry than the Fresh Market fresh turkey (garden variety) that I smoked the same year in my PBC. The heritage bird was 5 times the price of the Fresh Market bird. Never again.

Current line-up of cookers: Oklahoma Joe's Bronco Pro, Masterbuilt Gravity Series 1050, Blackstone ProSeries 4 Burner 36" griddle, Weber Performer Deluxe and Weber Smokey Joe.
My in-laws came to that realization yesterday. I'm down with the flu this week and didn't make the two+ hour trek this time. I always smoke the turkey, and I insist on buying it here so I can ensure that it gets properly defrosted and that I have time beforehand to spatchcock it, etc. My MIL wouldn't dream of buying an ordinary grocery story turkey, but everyone raves about my smoked turkeys. I only wish I could have seen the looks on some faces when my wife hauled in the Kroger store brand turkey that I had already bought.

I had a pasture raised turkey last year. I think it was $125 or so??? I have had pasture raised chicken and like those a lot more than regular chickens so I was hoping the turkeys would be similar. While it was a very moist, tasty bird and definitely different than regular turkeys I wouldn't necessarily say it was THAT much better. I will probably stick with the free turkeys I get from the grocery store for spending $125.
