What's your favorite grocery store sub roll?

I bought a pack of thinly sliced ribeye today at Aldi for steak sandwiches this week. Then I went hunting for a hearty sub roll. None to be found. I need something robust enough to hold up to this meaty, provolone melty gem along with griddled onions and possibly au jus. I need something I can find readily available at a grocery store. I may just stop by Jersey Mike's and buy an entire sub roll as I've done before but looking for other options. Don't say "bake your own" cause I'm not a baker and that ain't happening 😉

Not sure if you can get them where you are
.. but I recall pretty much any cheesesteak recipe calling for Amororso rolls. Did I spell that right? And since you said grocery store, I won’t say your favorite Italian deli.

I've ordered those from Amazon; they were okay to good, but not the excellent I was led to believe.

You are correct: Amoroso rolls. Not available everywhere, and even around here it depends on the store you’re shopping in. In those instances we get others such as Maier’s Italian steak rolls.

There's an Italian market in Greensboro I bought subs from last week named Giacomo's. Super authentic and make just about everything from scratch, including mozzarella qnd mortadella. I just may see what breads they have available on my next trip.
There's a cool YouTube video on their web page if you're interested
Explore a wonderful selection of authentic Italian meats and groceries at Giacomo's Italian Market.

I was going to suggest you stop by your favorite sub shop (and then you said that), but just see if they'd sell you the roll separately. Can't hurt to ask.

Yes sir they will. It's kind of an unspoken option at Jersey Mike's. I've done it a few times. Last time the employee looked at me like a deer in the headlights and said "just the roll?"..her manager was within ear shot and told her how to ring it up.

Good to know about jersey mikes! That reminds me, we are doing our “Claro’s Run” tomorrow. I’m out of sausage, Romano, pepperoni, etc

How can anybody be out of Romano or pepperoni? That's a crime against humanity!!

I know!!! Actually, it’s just the rind left (save for beans or sauce or soup) and there is one portion of pepperoni left. So basically, I’m stocking up for the summer.

The Jersey Mike’s is a great option if you want a softer roll. The Italian market if you want a more robust roll. I usually prefer the latter for the type of cheesesteak I think you’re going for.

You didn’t mention the hot cherry peppers. đŸ‘đŸŒđŸ˜

Try a bolillo roll for your sub! I’ve done it a few times and they taste wonderful. They have a nice crust when heated up and maintain a soft interior. You can trim the pointed ends if you want for a more traditional shape
..and they’re cheap!

We like Bolillo rolls too. Just did a copy-cat Italian sammy from an Italian market we use to frequent in Culver City (Sorrentos). Capicola, Mortadella, little bit of salami and provolone cheese with a slather of tomato sauce and mayo. I also find the Bolillo rolls a bit doughy, so we tear out the middle bread a bit. Perfect.

Excellent idea. There's a Mexican bakery down the road that makes those rolls. I'll check 'em out.

My favorite independent sub/grinder shop uses Turano, and they’re also sold in grocery stores.. Great bread.

I put my cheesesteaks and subs on pretzel hoggies from the local grocery, a Krogers business. We love the pretzel burger buns as well. Roasted on the grill or flattop makes them extra tasty.

+1 on the Amoroso rolls if you can find them. The bakery at Harris Teeter make excellent sub rolls. I had no idea that Jersey Mike's sold sub rolls.

I was checking out the shaved steak options on Aldi.com and the Turano rolls I mentioned came up as an additional suggestion. That’s what my next cheesesteak will be on.

Any of the store bought packaged rolls are going to be soft. Even name brand ones like Amoroso are significantly different from the fresh stuff they sell to the cheesesteak shops in Philly. Not sure if that's what you want or not.

I personally like mine with more of a chew/crust than the quasi-white bread soft rolls you get from the bread shelf. If you want more of a chew, the bollito or telera roll from a mexican grocery would be a good choice but also check out the bakery section of a grocery store. They usually have crustier/chewier rolls than the packaged ones. Mine often have a variety of shapes and sizes and they are like $1 each and although not amazing, to me they work better on cheesesteak/french dip type sandwiches than the soft rolls

There's a couple problems you're going to have:
                1. There's really no national brand that works well.
                2. Local brands may work, but are only found in small regions.
                3. Local bakeries.

One option, find a national sandwich chain with rolls that you like and buy those.: Subway, Jersey Mikes, etc.

Your best option, learn to bake bread and do your own.
