Changes in Ziplock and Hefty freezer bags?

Apparently both Ziplock and Hefty have completely changed to a new freezer bag style generally referred to as a Stay Open style. The bag’s bottom is wider so it sits flat on the counter while you fill it. The capacity is the same in both styles, but to get the stay open bottom they have reduced the height and depth while increasing the width. So some items that would easily fit in the old style bags will not fit inside the new ones such as my bread loaves. Additionally there is a lot of complaints online about both brands quality declining and leaking

Anyone have any good alternatives you have tried and liked? I could use my chamber vac, and I have in the past with some compression issues, but I like resealable freezer bags for some items like bread.

(I have no clue where a freezer bag discussion should be posted but since this is related to my bread baking here it goes. I will rely on the valet parking provided by the moderators to get it to its proper parking spot.)

Don, I know exactly the ones you’re talking about and have bought a box before. I think they’ve been out now for a couple of years maybe? I didn’t have any problems with them IIRC, only bought the one box. But….don't they still make the regular style bags too? I thought they still give you the option of either. I have to go to H-E-B and Walmart in a few minutes anyway, I’ll see what they offer here. Also, I usually buy store brand bags without any noticeable difference in quality. I like the Slider Style bags the best. Much easier to open and close than the zipper kind, for me anyway.

I went to both brand sites and they only show the new styles for sale. I know there are quality ones out there somewhere but I don’t want to take a chance with just blindly ordering ones based on their marketing. I know it is hard to fathom but many sellers take liberties with the truth.

They are much easier to open if you are sober.

I'm glad you mentioned this cause I've been wondering why my bread loaves no longer fit in the freezer bags. I was wanting to find some with more height, more like the bags bread comes in from the bakery section at the grocers.

Don, you’re right, it looks like everyone is forcing those down our throats. Just got back from Walmart and even their store brand freezer bags are the “stay open” type. Except for a few exceptions like sandwich bags, they’re all doing it. Even the storage bags are the “stand and fill” type.

Thanks. Unfortunately Meijer doesn’t have any stores near me.

Ziploc Professional Freezer Bags, Quart, 300 Count https://a.co/d/3l150Lf

These make no mention of the Stand and Fill.

Thanks Panhead John I need the 1 gallon size in the old dimensions. Unfortunately your link was for quart size. Still appreciate the try.🙂

Donw I buy my bags from Aldi now. They have a heavy duty freezer gallon size that is durable and works great. It doesn't stand up like the new one's so the dimensions might be what you are looking for. I use them mostly for sous vide. Added plus is they are much less expensive at $1.89 for 30 bags.

Same here. Switched over to Aldi's bags about a year ago. Although I don't care for their single seal bags, but I don't think we ever liked single seal bags no matter who they were made by.
